Hi all,
I currently run a few pieces of Mac hardware, chiefly a 2009 Mac Pro (Dual Xeon 2.93, 32gb RAM), a 2009 27in iMac (3.0Ghz, 16gb RAM) and a 2012 15in i7 rBMP (2.7Ghz, 16gb RAM).
I have upgraded the Mac Pro and rMBP to 10.14.2 successfully and obviously left the iMac on 10.13.6 because the video card isn't Metal compatible.
My rMBP has the nVidia 2gb 650M (I think - it's not in front of me right now) and the Mac Pro has an AMD Radeon RX9 280x.
The UI performance difference between the Mac Pro and rMBP is very noticeable. If I open a window on the desktop on the Mac Pro, the animation is beautifully fluid whereas on the rMBP it stutters a bit. If I open a Dock folder on the Mac Pro it's silky smooth but on the rMBP it again stutters. This is the same for the Launchpad and other Finder animations.
OK, things I've tried to do to eliminate this on the rMBP:
1) Fresh install from scratch - outcome: no different
2) Install the LUI and WhateverGreen extensions - outcome: no different
3) Disable switching between the built-in Intel video card and nVidia card - outcome: no different
So, am I right in thinking this is either that the video system as a whole in the rMBP is wholly underpowered and not enough to run 10.14.x smoothly? It was absolutely buttery smooth on 10.13.6 though.
I'm really not wanting to upgrade the rMBP to a newer model as it serves me well and is generally fast enough to run most things I throw at it very well indeed. Do I have to wait until nVidia release their web-drivers and CUDA drivers or is that just never going to happen?
What else can I try to get this working better?
