John Lewis seem to have upped their usual 2 year warranty to 3 on ipads. Also optional 3 year accidental damage cover, with no excesses, starts at £40. So wife’s ipad pro 11 256gb is coming from there; accidental damage cover is £70 in this case. Seems to beat comfortably the value of Apple Care.

I am a big fan of John Lewis and often buy electrical items there because they have competitive pricing and offer generous extended warranty periods. However, with Apple products I have been hesitant because I am not sure who would actually perform a repair if I ever needed to make use of the warranty. Genuine question if anyone knows: say I buy an iPad from JL and manage to crack the screen during year 2 — who would do the repair (is it a genuine AASP and genuine Apple screen)?

That’s the same thing that concerns me too. I don’t really trust anyone but Apple to repair their own products. I rather pay for Apple Care Plus and get two years warranty through that.

No point paying money for warranties in Europe since you are covered for 3 years via EU law and 6 years via UK consumer law. Apple always offers repairs for free when using consumer laws.

not if it's physical damage. consumer laws only cover defects and technically only those present at time of delivery. apple might bend knee to avoid the headache if someone shouts 'consumer law' over a defect issue two years out but if you crack the glass etc that's on you. and for some folks, paying for an extended service that even partially covers damage is worth it

Apple confirmed to me that iPads are not repairable and are always swapped out. I went through Currys here in the UK for my 10.5" with the bright spot issue and they confirmed it would be sent off to Apple.

I believe from reading others' experiences on this site, if you take your device into an Apple store they will often honour the 1 year guarantee if you bought it from an authorised reseller (I assume they recoup the cost as part of the agreement?) Outside of that, I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine JL will probably just swap the unit out rather than attempting an in house repair? I know from experience with a TV if the model you have has been discontinued, they will likely give you the latest close-equivalent available too!

I did this with my ASK for 10.5 where the glue had come off on one side. It was purchased with my IPP from O2. When I complained to them they said it was wear and tear and would not do anything so I went to the apple store, it was in warranty still and no problem. They replaced it although it was not in a new box, a blank white one I think but it looks and behaves as brand new.

I bought a new iPad 2 days before the 3 year guarantee kicked in. In years gone by JL would let you have the 3 year guarantee if purchased up to 28 days prior to the new offer, not anymore.

The customer service used to be brilliant, really clamping down now and just joining the other high street stores.
