UK buyers; John Lewis or Apple store?

i'm pretty sold on the new macbook, an i intend to purchase it soon as i can.. but whats nagging me now is where to buy one.

john lewis offer an extra years warranty on top of apples. which can be quite a good thing (i don't really want to pay an extra ~100/200 on top for extended apple care)

but the apple shop is more convinent for me, espessily if i need to return it or get it fixed?

not the most pressing dilmea, but i would apreciate some imput

American Express adds one year additional warranty to the warranty the item has. If you get AppleCare later on, you can get 4 years of warranty total

Bear in mind that in its first year, when it's under Apple's warranty, you can still take your Mac (since they'll know when it was registered) into an Apple store and still have it repaired under their warranty.

It's only in the second year that you'd be limited to taking it back to John Lewis for them to arrange to get it fixed. You can still take it to the Apple store for Genius diagnosis regardless of age/retailer purchased from.

I work for JL so not entirely unbiased. Bear in mind that JL don't have them in stock yet so if you want one now (or you want a BTO) then you'll need to go via Apple. I bought mine from JL and found it easier to get a replacement from them when there was a minor fault, than I suspect it would have been from Apple. And should you decide to fork out for Applecare, you can buy an extended warranty from JL (for about the same price) which extends it to 5 years rather than 3.

John Lewis is better IMO. The service is second to none, that extra year of Warranty will come in handy (Especially in a Laptop) and when i ever return anything no questions are asked they just give me a replacement item or a refund.

The John Lewis warranty is a good middle ground, between extended coverage and cost savings.

you couldnt get 4 years anyway, Applecare and Amex would be give you double coverage in the 2nd year.....then Amex's extra coverage would end and you would be on the 3rd year of Applecare

EDIT: I was wrong and wako was right. If you buy your mac with amex and also buy applecare, then Amex will give you their "buyer assurance" coverage AFTER Applecare's extended coverage so you would indeed get 4 years

Well it might be easier to fix, but you only get 90 days phone and 1 year of walk in service for the macbook. In John Lewis,for the same price, you get 2 years of service.

Always buy my macs from John Lewis - although I sometimes have to wait a bit longer for them to get them in.

I would buy my Macbook from Lewis's, but I'm quite sure my Higher Ed discount won't apply there
