UK educational discount halved?

The educational discount on iMacs in the UK used to be 12%. I know this because the top-end iMac that I bought last October, which should've been £1,649, was £1,452. Plus, AppleCare was reduced from £139 to £34. So, all in, about £1,486.

Looking at these figures, it seems to me that the discount's been reduced to 6%. And now, AppleCare costs almost £118. Had these been the prices seven months ago, my iMac would've cost me another £180-odd.


Has anybody in the UK tried to buy one of the new iMacs with the educational discount? Are these figures accurate? I'm asking because it never used to be possible to access these figures away from a university computer - you'd only get the educational pricing from an institutional login, or by phoning the Apple Store hotline - whereas I'm suddenly able to access them from my desk at home. I'm wondering whether (and kinda hoping that...) this is a website screw-up.

It all seems rather odd. Odd that Apple would cut the discount by such a substantial proportion - which is bound to dissuade some students from buying one - and odd that I can suddenly access this part of the website.

Probably the basic education discount for anyone in education at any level except HE.

Also do note that the applecare is actually just extended telephone support. I'm not at uni at the moment so I can't confirm this but before the refresh you actually got the 3 years warranty standard if you purchased it online from the HE store - the apple care is just for 3 years phone support although I did ask an apple employee if the standard 3 year warranty included on-site support and he wasn't sure. I'd definitely give them a call just to confirm.

No, mate. You need to produce university ID. Either in store, or scanned and e-mailed.

It should be pointed out that educational discount vary by institution and you'll almost always get a better discount going through the apple store from your institutions network. To put a figure on it there's almost £200 difference between the standard access from anywhere education store and my uni specific store on a 27 inch iMac with i7, 2gb VRAM and AppleCare. Big difference is the AppleCare, almost a third the price going through uni store.

I think so, yes. Not at work so can't check on the uni store but I think it's a bit less. Not the full discount but every little helps!

this is interesting indeed.. check out the screenshot below.. it looks like you get 3 years complementary warranty when ordering via the educational store as opposed to 1 year only.. so the apple care bump really is for telephone support only..

Mind you, do the Xeon processors even do general computy-stuff as well as Sandybridge i5s/i7s? Or are they only particularly good at servery, professional kinda things?
