Uk Help!!! New Macbook And Bt Help

Please Please can someone help me. I am so close to returning my new macbook.

I'm a new mac user after years of insults from my mates who are mac users i finally caved in and purchased a new 1.83ghz macbook.

All was well until I tried to install my BT Broadband Voyager modem. All was well until it came to connecting the modem. Then it all went wrong.

Nothing I tried worked. It wouldn't recognise my modem or even let me configure my connection. (By the way its a USB modem)

Has anyone tried installing the BT Software or had any issues with the mac book trying to install USB modems?

Please help, I want to give the Mac a chance but I feel the PC pulling me back!!

I'm forced into using a BT ISDN modem at home in the countryside as the lines aren't broadband capable yet. I've found BT driver support for Macs absolutely terrible. To be quite honest my advice would be to drop by your nearest large Tesco (or Tesco extra) and pick up the Linksys HG200.

It's a Tesco only wireless modem and has one ethernet out and it's very cheap. I got mine off eBay for £20 but I think they're about £40 in store. It's the same circuitry as one of of the more expensive Linksys units but it only has one ethernet out, that's about it.

This way you'll have the benefit of a wireless internet connection to.

The only thing I can think of is that BT's drivers aren't Universal Binary so are having compatibility issues with Intel Macs.

I had major problems with the same modem, and it took a while to sort out. I haven't used mine in more than a year, but I remember I found the workaround via Google - so its out there somewhere.

What package are you on? If its on one of the officially Mac supported (two most expensive BT Broadband packages) you should just call tech support and get them to help. But that does depend on the savvy of the tech - there are some complete muppets out there who just read from a script.

I'll be calling myself as I switched back to BT and got the high end wireless voyager modem/router. I can connect via ethernet, but when it comes to Airport it ain't having any of it. My xbox360 fares better, but even that suffers from wireless outages.....

I don't live with my brother so can't offer you that much help but;

My brother has his mac set up with BT broadband and didnt have any problems. Ring up BT. They are pretty good on the phone.

I had to buy a modem for my iMac to run on the internet. Our other modem just didn't work with my mac. I can't remember what it was but it was £60 from PCworld and has 4 outputs for a network.


But yeah, you'll have to buy a new modem. Sorry

That USB Voyager modem is a POS - they rarely update the drivers for it and it can end up making your Mac crash when it wakes from sleep as a result.

Most definitely go and buy any form of ADSL modem/router that has an ethernet port instead. It will work with your BT broadband out of the box and with your Mac. You might also want to take the opportunity to buy a wireless version and use your Macbook on the go.

Bowdeni - it's not the BT bit that's the problem. It's the USB modem. If BT will send him an updated ethernet modem (which is what I think they send out these days) then he'll be fine.

Like bently said go and pick up a ethernet/wireless modem and you will be fine.

I had to do this when I got Tiger the day it came out. The USB modem had no updated drivers so couldnt use it. I went and bought a wireless modem/router, a netgear one for £60 and couldnt be happier.
