I've just spoken with an insider in O2 who says the iPhone launch in the UK will not be until December as they are currently having problems with the 'carrier signal'. He wouldn't elaborate, but I'm surmising (if true!) that this is due to the new EDGE network O2 would have to provide to support gen1 iPhone.

Unless gen2 iPhone is being tested for the 3G networks in the UK....

Pinch the salt as usual.

Fine by me - my contract ends in november. Hope it has Leopard support!:D

This would really surprise me.

As far as I know O2 does not have an EDGE network whereas it does have a fully functioning 3G network.

I very much doubt that they would go to the trouble and expense of upgrading their GPRS network to EDGE just to accomodate one piece of equipment, when they have a superior alternative already.

The iPhone will inevitably be 3G sooner rather than later if it is to survive any length of time, so why bother?

This 'insider' you have at o2 - what does he do at o2 exactly?

Big Brother is watching you!

Seriously though, I just noticed that you come from Nottingham and thought it would be fun to 'personalise' the post.

I realised that after I'd hit 'submit reply' - but I actually do work at that store!

Part-time mind you whilst I'm doing my Masters degree - but still, freaky!

Interesting. It was pure chance - I ran a google search for O2 stores in Nottingham and opted for that one (out of a choice of two).

I take it then that you can't give us some definitive news on these rumours about O2 and whether it will be EDGE or 3G?

I don't think we'll ever get it in Plymouth

Just on the off chance, I went in to one of our two O2 shops and asked if they even had a clue when they would have the iPhone. they looked at me as though I was speaking a foreign language.

I was speaking English so fair enough, maybe it was foreign to them.

After speaking a bit slower and more precisely they finally said last week of November or first week of December. I was told in an authoratitive voice that they had already been given their lists of new handsets up until that time period.

How much truth is in this I don't know, so I threw a vast amountof salt over my shoulder.

I wish. All we're being told at retail level is that it's all rumours up to now, and I do get people coming in to store occasionally to ask about the iPhone itself, but all I can do is say I know as much as them.

I have a friend who works at head office fairly high up in the management team, and he doesn't know anything about it - what's odd is he tends to be involved in discussions with different manufacturers regarding software, for example he's sorting out the Nokia E90 delay right now, as o2 had issue with the way Nokia had implemented certain things on the handset. He's heard nothing about the iPhone so far, and he's as intrigued as me. I'm assuming that's because it's all very 'hush hush' even at that level at the moment.

Oh well. Just a waiting game for now.

Ignore them. Most people who work at the stores can barely string sentences together. It's a requirement of employment
