Hi there. My friend is considering buying a used, white iPhone 3GS which is on O2 Pay as you go (UK), but the seller says that it has minor cracks running up from the dock connector on the rear.

The question is this - will the Apple store require the original 3GS O2 pay as you go SIM to be present with it, if he returns it under Applecare to have it exchanged, or is the iPhone Applecare exchange only done on the handset and not the supplied SIM?.

This is vital, as the seller may not wish to part with his SIM - we don't know as yet.

Thanks. :D

Let me get this right...

You are planning to buy a damaged iPhone with the express purpose of taking it to the Apple store and defrauding Apple for a brand new phone. And you'd like our help and advice.

Have I missed anything here?

Yes, you've missed (assumed) a lot, so jump right off that high horse, before throwing your moral weight around!!. Who is to say that the seller is even aware of the crack issue on the iPhone, and also aware he could have had it replaced?. The fact is irrelevant to him, as he has offered it for sale. This fact does not negate OR affect the Applecare, and their right to decide whether is is to be replaced or repaired.

1/ The cracks are the ones that have been noted to appear on some white iPhone models.

2/ Whether they are the cause of manufacturing defects or negligence, will be decided by the Apple store, in any case.

3/ Just exactly who do you think you are, jumping on board and telling me I intend to "defraud" Apple?.

Would you like to point out exactly where it is that you are confused into thinking I am going to "defraud" anyone?

My question involves whether Apple will need the original SIM, and I invited responses to that; the item will be replaced, should Apple decide it is a defect - that was not my question to you. I am not asking you for moral guidance thankyou very much, so either answer my question with an open & pleasant mind, or don't bother replying at all.

Attitudes like this, are half the reason people assume we're all arrogant fanboys!.

whoa, slow down there!!!!! He isn't 'defrauding' Apple lol. He is well within his rights to take it back to Apple with cracking issues if its still within the year warranty or else if he has Applecare!!!!!!!! Back off!!!!!!

Now to get onto the issue at hand, i dont see why you should have to have the original SIM as Apple only need to serial number of the phone to see whether its within its returnable timeframe. I cant see a problem with what you are planning to do.
