PC World, purchased it 1 week ago today.

No problem with it so far except for the yellow tinge which is not that bad, I'm on week 49.

PC World give 28 days to take it back with a fault, I consider the yellow tinge a fault, is this enough to be able to take it back? In some ways I am unsure if this is what I should do as I got a 10% discount off the screen price from PC World as in I told em I wouldn't buy it unless I got the discount, they were a little agitated but gave the deal. I'm not so sure I'd get the same deal again.

I am of a mind to actually take it back and wait until they start shipping new iMac 27's without the yellow tinge though. I note that the UK has no stock of new screens for them and I really don't fancy having to wait until they sort the supply problem out.

Being new to Mac (loving it btw) what/how do I successfully clear all my data off and return the item back to standard from switched on.

Also, when first loading it it asked me to register with Apple which I duly did, how do I de-register if I take it back and do I have only 14 days to do this with Apple as opposed to the 28 day return/exchange policy that PC World tend to operate.

Only problem I have found with the machine other than the annoying yellow tinge is that on two separate occasions it has not allowed me to shut down, I've used the force quit function to shut down anything that looks like it's open but when I hit the shut down tab it just won't shut down leaving me to do a hard shut down as in switch it off at the mains and disconnect it from the socket which of course cured the problem.

I have loaded all available updates to the machine one of which fixed the flicker.

This could just be me but I would not trust PC World with anything. I would go straight to an Apple store and speak to a Genius. They are currently giving a 10% (I think) rebate if you have a problem with a new iMac.

just tried to order a 27inch i7 imac from the apple directly, they said 3weeks shipping, i presume this means they have solved the problem and the new fixed ones are being made in china as we speak, so they should be able to fix yours.... for good.

i could of course be totally wrong.

I cannot take this back to an Apple store simply because it wasn't purchased from them etc. Or do you mean something else?

All Apple products have a 1 year limited warranty, which Apple themselves honour. It does not matter where you buy it from, this warranty still applies.

For more information please see here

Please note that you do not have to buy this, you still have 1 year limited warranty, the purchase is just for an extension. I posted the link as it explains what it is better than I can.

What would taking it back to an Apple shop achieve? Would they refund me?

I understand the 1 yr warranty but surely you have to take it back from where you purchased it or is this not applicable in the case of an iMac?

You can take it back to PC World if you wish as that is where you purchased it, however all they will do is replace your unit with another from there stock. I would much rather go to an Apple store and explain my problem to them, either get them to fix it or give me a new one and receive the rebate.

As per my first post, I think I'm still under the pcworld 28 day issue but if I can take it to an apple store and they'll give me a new one and a rebate that would of course be the preferred option. I just wasn't aware that in such a short space of time I could take it back to Apple as opposed to pcworld. I'm sure PC World give a 28day return or exchange policy on it.

go to PC world and get a refund, then wait till the screen issue is confirmed as fixed.

apple are already offering good will gestures and refunds to customers, couldn't you just call them up and get your 10% that way?

btw, if you do take it back to PC World, be prepared for a challenge, they are not helpful when it comes to post purchase care. I would NEVER, ever buy from them

Will apple refund a pc world purchase?, they are closer to me by a fair distance (hadn't checked prior to purchase)

Also, how do I return the mac to as it came out of the box? as in remove all my bits and pieces from it?

no, of course Apple won't refund a PC World purchase. Take it back to PC World get a refund as 'inherently faulty'

I have no clue what the other sentence means..

As in return the mac to it's pre-loaded status without all my added software/drivers.

On a pc it's simply a format, not sure how it works on the mac (I am only a user of one week)

I initially came to this forum for tips on installing win 7 through bootcam but soon spotted the yellow tinge screen. I'm almost minded to wait for the day days pc world refund policy is up and then hop on to Apples own service/warranty and let them sort the screen issue out when /if one becomes available.

Just reboot (hold down C while booting) from the install disc that came with it and just format and re-install but when it comes to setting up a user, simply shut down the machine instead.

Oops, missed OllyW's post. sorry.

Thank you for that, I'll do that when iI can confirm it's to go back due to the yellow tinge.

I've not actually used the discs it came with, not even taken them from their packets.

I've also purchased 'the missing manual' but haven't yet gotten round to reading that either, I'm still in my post purchase loved up mode and having wayyyy to much fun with youtube and some of my older videos etc.

I'm confident I won't be returning to a PC, I've had a bellyful of Gates esquire, now it's Job's esquire that keep me from the tv/pub. Out with explorer, in with safari and firefox etc.

Which leads me back to an original conundrum.. Take it back to PCWorld and lose my 10% discount (I'm 7 days in from original purchase) or do I stick with it until 28days are up in which case I can no longer return it to PCW for a refund but can then I guess take it back to an Apple outlet and see what they offer me as in replacement screen and perhaps some sort of 'token gesture' for the time spent away from me whilst being repaired/replaced etc?

I was talking about this

you could theoretically do this before your 14 days is up. It's worth a try eh?

I shall give it a go, pcworlds discount actually works out at 12.5% discount, it wasn't cash it was something else I wanted which they grudgingly threw in for free and by grudgingly I mean exactly that, first of all they called one manager, then another and then another and eventually they said 'buy it now and we'll give you what you want' I was going to buy it anyway so nothing was lost etc. The item I got from them was software and has been opened/registered which they will not have back for obvious reasons etc.

I'll try Mac tomorrow and see what they have to say, the yellow tinge is annoying but in the short term it's liveable, long term it would grate at me...

good luck. And in future, try and stay away from pc world and their affiliates (dixons/currys etc). The staff are all on commission and will sell you anything they can. Try and take something back and you face a whole bag of hurt.

In future try more reputable stores like John Lewis (2 year free warranty also from here), or online at amazon.

Also, don't forget the apple stores. They also offer pretty decent customer service.

I'm with you on that, I am well aware of pcworlds service, they are pants at the best and the 'Anytime' care pack that Currys offer is useless .

I went there because I wanted a machine and the apple store had not got one to sell me and they were virtually the same price so thought what the heck, I can take it back if I don't want it.....not expecting to and here I am probably having to, we'll see on the morrow.

As for Dixons/Currys, I am about to buy 40/42in TV, I've used pcw as a reference point, gone took a look at the sets and done my the reviews on the forum but to buy one I would either buy from as you say John Lewis as they offer a 5yr guarantee on all their sets or possibly richer sounds or super-fi but probably not the latter as they're difficult when taking stuff back.

getting a little off topic, but Richer sounds are great on advice and the 5 year john lewis warranty is fantastic.

I usually always shop online at amzon, or on the high street, its always john lewis - any problems that I have had with either have been quickly and painlessly sorted out (and also usually involved me getting free stuff - which is nice!)

well

I'll be back later tomorrow to update on any progress I may be able to make re the iMac
