UK: Query about Apple repair costs - Macbook

Hi,

I have a Macbook and the dvd drive has stopped reading dvds... been getting gradually worse.

SO, I expect that I need to get the DVD drive replaced.

Anyone know how much I might expect to pay for this if I take it into my local AppleStore?

Anyone have a comparable experience?

I'm guessing you didn't buy AppleCare.
If your MacBook is less than 12 months old then it's still covered by the warranty.

If not then you're looking at around £70 an hour labour + cost of parts.

No, I didn't get AppleCare.

Macbook is about 15 months old. Well if it's 70 per hour plus parts, I'm looking at ... hmmm... WELL over 100 quid.

Would be cheaper to sell it on eBay (with faulty drive) and get a new machine with my Edu discount! Sigh.

You could just buy a new drive and replace it yourself.

Shop around and get quotes.

They will need to remove the top case, battery and ram cover, replace the faulty drive and put back together, then test.

I would say 1 hour maximum £70

The drive will be about £100 - £150 depending on whether its the combo or superdrive.

+ VAT on all the above.

My Opinion the worst case scenario would be - £220 plus VAT

I could but that sounds kinda scary. It's not the most user friendly unit to upgrade from what I can see... is it?? :-s

Jeeeesus... over 100 for a superdrive!? Is that just Apple's silly pricing?

Think I'd be better looking at a new machine.
