UK users: o2 Simplicity for iPhone

If you have anything helpful to say about the Simplicity tariff and using it with the iPhone please post here. Also, if you need any help with this again just post here.

I have a question.

How are other costs of the simplicity tarriff covered?
e.g. calls abroad etc


I will be buying a 16GB 3GS for £440 off O2.
I will replace the payg SIM with O2's Simplicity tarriff.
£20 month - 800mins - 1600 texts - unlimited web bolt-on.
If i want to connect to wi-fi, just enter the number of my payg sim.
Total 12 month cost will be £680, i get better value, and i wont be tied down when a new version comes out next year.

Only downsides are no visual voicemail or call merging.
This is fine as normal voicemail will suffice, and i dont need to speak to more than one person at a time.
 
I'm on an original iPhone with Simplicity, works brilliantly for me. Surprised they haven't made it more of a disadvantage to do it that way.

You also don't get access to the free wi-fi points and such, but that doesn't bother me either.

Yep i was a little sad at first but then found that if you enter the mobile number of your pay as you go sim you got with the iphone when connecting to a wifi spot such as bt's or the cloud, it will let you connect automatically from now on as it remembers your phones mac address.

Your old payg sim can be at home in your cupboard and you will still
be able to use the wifi free on your simplicity sim. Awesome
 
I've just moving to a Simplicity sim. Online Simplicity, 600 mins, 1200 texts & web browsing bolt-on for £20 a month. 30 day contract version.

Thing is I already have an iPhone 3G from Pay As You Go (can't afford the 3GS).

I'm looking forward to running 3.0 on my 3G with Simplicity sim and will upgrade to a 3GS when I can comfortably afford it.

ag55, I have quoted you post from the other thread. So just to clarify (I'm not too clued up regarding the internet). I will be able to access the internet ANYWHERE? like walking down the street, on a train, at the bus station etc....?

If this is the case, what exactly is the advantage of a wifi spot such as mcdonalds/starbucks? Is it quicker or something?

Yes, anywhere you have GPRS, EDGE or 3G signal (you will usually have at least one anywhere that you have cell service)

GPRS - Slowest, not the best
EDGE - Slow, but usable
3G - Fastest by quite a bit.

You'll be able to tell which because of the symbol at the top of the iPhone's screen next to the carrier name.

GPRS - small circle
EDGE - E
3G - 3G

Overall having no contract seems a massive bonus my only concern is insurance. what happens if I lose it/get robbed? By buying the phone outright that's £440+ down the drain. If you lose your iphone on the iphone tariff is there any benefit or do they offer you a new one at full price?

Anyone got any good ideas for cheap, reliable phone insurance for the UK?

yeah i thought about insurance, but to be honest im not one of those types which lose my phone. owned 7 phones and none have been damaged or stolen. granted you can never be 100% sure but i dont think i will lose it. if i do then i guess i'll deserve paying the extra
 
I am a long time browser of these boards, but this is my first post.

I have been waiting a few months for this new iphone since my last contract ran out and im currently on a £10 a month simplicity deal.

Ive decided the new iphone isnt much of an upgrade from the 3g so im satisfied as a first time iphone owner, the 8gb 3g will suit me perfectly and I plan to buy without a contract.

Ive read posts regarding the free wifi when activating the iphone with the p&g sim and switching the sim back, but i went into two o2 shops during my lunch hour to be told this wouldnt work? Obviously other members on here are currently doing exactly this.

So does this 100% work?
 
IF simplicity users can post their commments when using the new iphone tmrw and onwards.....would be very helpful.

My iPhone's covered by my home insurance (coverage for things stolen outside home for up to £1500). I'm with Endsleigh. I used to have Barclays home insurance which covered my stolen Treo in Spain years ago.

are there any other SIMS/PLANS from 02 like the simplicity? that would work on iphone, aprart from the obvious pay go and contract
 
I received my new PAYG iPhone 3GS this morning and am successfully using my simplicity sim card.

The first thing I did, before even switching on the iPhone for the first time was to put my simplicity sim into phone. Next, I connected it to iTunes and activated. Very smooth process, just registered it against my Apple store account.

I immediately received a few text messages from O2 informing me of my username and password for logging onto the O2 site and welcoming me to the simplicity tariff. I have only just received the simplicity sim and am using it for the first time so if you're an existing user you might not get these.

Then I synced with iTunes to get my music, photos etc.

Here's the only tricky bit. At first, I wasn't able to use any data services. No email, text, maps, etc. I did a quick search and discovered these settings on the O2 site. For the simplicity tariff you need to enter the Pay Monthly settings. Once I restarted my phone, the data service was enabled and I immediately received two more text messages from O2 enabling MMS.

Job done. Everything is working as advertised.

At no point did I open the envelope containing the sim card supplied with the iPhone. It's still sitting unopened on my desk.

Same experience kinda.

I say that as I phoned o2 before finding settings on this site as I didn't find an official page on o2 site as the woman on the phone put me on hold to speak to "the data team". She then proceeded to tell me that I *HAD* to either use the PAYG sim or get put on the iPhone plan. I just told her I'd sort it myself and she'd been very unhelpful as I've been told by another o2 CS rep that it was possible. Who pays £450 for a phone then willingly allows to be put on an overpriced tariff? :rolleyes:

I've yet to come across a Cloud/BT wifi yet as I barely turn it on. I'd rather waste o2's bandwidth. When I do I'll be sure to try putting in the sim number in. Do I have to activate it or anything anyway?

i know this seems to go against what everyone has said, but i just took out a simplicity contract only a few hours ago (12 months at £19.58 800 mins, 1600 texts and unlimited web bolt on), when i asked the question whats the difference between web bolt on and wi-fi bolt on, he said that the wi-fi for for those phones that only have wi-fi, i am a bit puzzled, and i did ask him again does web bolt on mean i can use the 3g anywhere and put the mobile number in to use the cloud services and he replied yes.

Anyone else know if this is true or not?

you spoke to them also while making the purchase?

i dont know...but web bolt on means everything is ok...you made the right choice.....relax......

surprised he said yes, to the tactic of using original sim number to access wi fi cloud and bT spots.......

yes you can go on net anywhere with 3G
Wi fi is working for you also.... if spot asks for code, try your origianl sim code/number.....
 
dont worry, the guy on the phone got it wrong, i went into my local o2 store today and asked the question and he said no, the guy was eitehr talking rubbish or i'm going to get charged (except i wont cos ill cancel it) so that killed that :(
 
Hi.

I am thinking of ending my contract with Orange early so I can get my hands on the iPhone 3GS (sad to leave them but I'm getting a bit tired of the persistent rumours that they may or may not carry the iPhone soon). I assume it's possible to keep my Orange number even with the Simplicity tariff?

Are there likely to be any insurance issues or apple care issues if you're using an iPhone without the original SIM that came with it (i.e. Pay & Go SIM)? The post below from the O2 forums seems to suggest there might be some issues:

Hi, thought I'd add my experience of o2 Simplicity. I bought my iphone 3GS on launch day, ported my number over to o2 and was happy. I knew I could then move over to Simplicity. However, it took me four attempts to get the right advice from someone. With Simplicity I'd have to pay £7 per month for wifi. I looked on these forums and saw I could use the number that came with the phone to log on to wifi no problems.

However, my problem is that that number no longer exists as I ported it. BY the way, you still need to top up £10 once a quarter to continue with the free wifi. So, I'm now stuck.

I have an o2 Simplicity sim that arrived today. I don't want to lose my number so want to port it again. I will therefore not have a phone number assigned to the iphone original sim..... The guy at o2 said the original number I had for the iphone would have 'gone into the ether' and isn't resurectable....

Does this make sense?! I'd be grateful for your help as I thought I'd covered all bases before purchasing. Some poor advice from o2 and now I'm a bit stuck!
