I am going to purchase an iPhone XS Max on iPhone Upgrade Programme. It will come with Applecare+, but living in London with all the moped thieves around (many of my friends had their phones stolen recently), I would like to also buy a phone insurance with theft and loss protection. Looking at all insurance available in the UK, however, all of them seem to force you to opt into accidental damage cover as well which works out really expensive. Last year I managed to find a theft cover for iPhone 8 Plus for £60 a year, but this year this seems extremely hard for some reason. All the covers include accidental damage and the prices are exorbitant....

Has anyone managed to find any insurance that would cover iPhone XS Max ONLY for theft and loss?

As said above, home insurance should be the best & cheapest option. Just make sure your policy covers the value of your phone. Some policies only cover up to £500 or less if you read the small print.

Try protectyourbubble. I don’t think they’re very good, but they’re cheap.

I thought of that, but my home insurance charges a lot more than £100 a year for an away personal possessions cover. Also my phone is much more likely to get stolen than my house broken into, therefore the likelihood of this happening and my premiums going up as a result are a lot higher. Would much prefer a standalone option...

The price of an XS Max is much higher than an iPhone 8 Plus. £300-£350 higher (vs launch prices) for similar storage capacities. There's your reason.
