I'm having a go at modding my existing Mac Pro until the jury comes in on the 2013 model.

While I'm reading the 'All We Know About Maximizing CPU Related Performance' thread started by Tutor, I thought I'd start another thread to discuss the best options.

I'm looking for the ULTIMATE CPU upgrade. Any advice much appreciated.

Lots of forums on upgrades...but isn't the x5690 the fastest CPU the MP can take?
 
Ah! It looks like the W series was included in 5500 series and not available in 5600. Presumably I couldn't put a 6/7500 in because it has a different socket type.

Agreed, also the ultimate price - £1,700 ($2,700)!!

Checked Amazon US and it's $1,000 less. Wtf?!
 
Intel speak (Dual CPU 5500 or 5600 Series Xeon):

E = Enterprise or Mainstream (rack-optimized)
X = Performance
W = Workstation (Also Performance optimized)

Note: Intel seems to have dropped the "W" classification from the 5600 series. And for whatever reason all Single CPU models (3500 and 3600 series) carry the "W" prefix.

Anyway, and 5500 or 5600 series Xeon processor will will work on all 2009 (4,1) dual CPU Mac Pro and above.

The W5580 will also work just fine. And correct, The X5690 is the fastest processor available for the 4,1 or 5,1 Mac Pro. This is the case now, and always will be. IIMU, that future generations of the of the Xeon will use a different pin configuration.

BTW, I'm running W5590s in my 2010 (5,1) Machine and I'm very happy with the performance.

Thanks for everyone's help with this. In the end I decided, as we're so close to the launch of the new Mac Pro, to put this on hold.

Although given the disappointing Geekbench results, and my propensity for hacking around with stuff, another option would be to venture down the hackintosh path.

only time will tell (and an actual product to tear-down) how upgradable the new cylinder is. maybe vid-card and cpu upgrades will be possible.
 
^^^^Yep, it does. I'm running a couple of W5590s in my Mac Pro 5,1, also a TDP of 130 watts. I sped up the fans a wee bit, but my temps are well under control.

Hi Lou May I know what are the temps of our CPU A and B under your Normal load and your average CPU fan speed ( Boost A and B ) ? Thanks
 
^^^^Under load CPUA 158°, CPUB 142° - Normal Idle CPUA 110°, CPUB 102°.

My Temps are, of course in the Fahrenheit scale, and is measured at the diode.
