I'm facing a funny issue with the Studio - Mac OS (12.4) - it is retaining that a second screen is ON although I had turned it off. I have a thunderbolt monitor connected to the studio, and a USB-C monitor. Both work perfectly fine - with OS X identifying both, however when I turn the USB-C monitor off, - the computer is not acknowledging that it was turned off, and it shows that I still have the monitor on. The only way for it to accept that it's off, is by unplugging the USB-C cable from the computer or restarting the computer. It then recognizes that the monitor is no-longer there and displays everything on the one screen.

I tried plugging in the USB-C monitor to other ports, but it's the same behaviour, once i turn the monitor ON and it registers in the system, the system will not let go of it although it's turned off.

what happens when you pull the power plug from the monitor instead of using the on/off button?

Some displays just work this way. It's not specific to the Mac Studio. I have an LG 24UD58-B that always shows as connected, unless I switch the input away from a specific computer before turning off the display.

That has happened to me with USB-C/DP/HDMI monitors - never Thunderbolt monitors…

Re - icubed - unplugging the monitor did not make a difference, the studio still thought the monitor was connected.

Perhaps it maybe just an OSX thing on apple silicon computers that may be solved in a future update. Strangely, I can put the computer to sleep then wake it up and the monitor is no-longer visible (as it's turned-off).

No issue whatsoever with the thunderbolt monitor. It's just the USB-C monitor. A bit quirky.

Side thing. I also use SwitchResX that unfortunately the 'detect displays' option doesn't do anything on the apple silicon - Mac studio, and it can't enable / disable displays anymore. SwitchResX had all it's features working on the intel Macbook Pro that I had before. The issue is reported in their FAQ.

Can you check whether you're able to enable / disable any of those monitors using SwitchResX? If so, reach out to the developer to let him know. His FAQ say otherwise, https://madrau.com/support/support/faq.html

SwitchResX has limited functionality for me - to changing resolutions / colour profiles / mirror / setting a main display - all of which I am happy about, and the developer acknowleges the current limitations of it. Also, if the option of Detect Displays worked, - then it would ping - have an effect on OSX to identify that the USB-C monitor is no-longer there when its turned off. But that's not the case. SwitchResX still shows the USB-C monitor as available although it's been turned off! As for the Thunderbolt monitor, yup, SwtichResX can tell whether it's On/Off - as that's acknowledged by OSX.

The issue is clearly an OS-X on silicon problem. Patience is required, another update or two, and it'll solve itself.

I never realised I couldn't disable a monitor using SwitchResX on my Mac Studio - I would never use the function, but now I see it is greyed out.

I use SwitchResX for switching to exact resolutions and colour profiles, and as I have two monitors connected to both my Mac Pro and my Mac Studio, I need a simple tool. I use Monitor Control for Brightness and Sound.
