Ultra Wide Angle help, which lens??

I am absolutly torn between the Tokina 11-16 2.8 or the Tokina 10-17 3.5-4.5

Im leaning towards the 10-17 because it will give me the fish eye effect(and if i dont want it i can crop it out). But the 11-16 is much faster and has great IQ.

So which one should i go with? All help is greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I'd take the 11-16 mm f/2.8 for sure. I have the Tokina 12-24 mm f/4, and while it has been great, I'd sure that the distortion you get from the 11-16 mm would be far less, as it has a shorter focal range to cover.

ya i thnk your right, i did a little more research and the 10-17 has a 2.5 star rating for IQ. to me thats crap. i just have to find a 11-16 now!!!!!

Are you shooting Canon, Nikon, Pentax, etc?

For a Canon 1.6x crop body (20D-30D, all digital Rebels), I'd recommend the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. It's not as fast as the f/2.8, obviously, but it gives a good range with very little distortion, even at the extremes.

I don't think you can "crop out" a fish eye effect. You can use post processing to convert it to "rectilinear," but that is, of course, imperfect. Besides, you don't have to crop much before you lose that ultra-wide view.

The 10-17 mm zoom is the only fisheye zoom I know of, it's a one-of-a-kind lens.

XTi so i have the 1.6 crop

i thought about it but from what ive heard the tokina has better IQ and its faster.

ya i looked at that but its to slow to me 20mm at 5.6 is kinda crazy and all my other lens's will be 2.8 or lower except for the 400 5.6.

Canon 10-22mm (or so), Tokina 12-24mm f/4, Sigma has another one around 10-20mm, or the Tokina mentioned above. All excellent lenses.

after a couple months of research on the lenses mentioned... canon and tokina, sigma, etc...

i settled for the canon. consistently good IQ (the lens components are supposedly "L" quality just not labeled as such because of EF-S) and i am very happy about it! it also made things easier because i bought it used and the prices were then relatively the same.

i've been doing more research and i found that the tokina 12-24 F/4 has a better build, consistent aperture, a better build quality, and has a higher price:quality ratio.

so i think i am going to go with the tokina 12-24 cus its cheaper than the canon, and is basically the same, if not better to the canon and i like the consistent aperture.
