Isn't it strange that one of the major advertising points of the new iMac is the "ultrafast Nvidia graphics - High-performance NVIDIA graphics bring all the speed you need to the latest 3D games and graphics-intensive applications," and then the upgrade graphics card is by ATI?

I also thought I read somewhere the iMacs that Snow Leopard will be particularly optimized for NVidia.

Is it still a given that the ATI card is a better option than the NVidia 130? I'm planning on getting the 3.06 iMac. I won't be playing any games but will be doing some graphic editing and movie editing on iMovie and iDVD.

Would people still recommend the ATI or is that only if you are interested in gaming. I don't mind spending the extra $50 and the extra shipping time isn't an issue for me.

Thanks for the help.

If you don't mind the time or money, then yes, get the ATI card since it is the best card they offer. It could only help with make the computer last a little longer.

Out of interest, the new iMac has the 9400M graphics chip correct? As does the new macbooks.
I guess that means that the graphics capability of the macbook and new imacs is identical? Provided the same ram and CPU speed of course.

i just notcied that the top two imacs only have the upgrade option, which i think is lame. but i guess they wouldnt have that option in the lower ones cause of the price. and the ati is faster than the nvidia graphics wtf.

I'm willing to bet that CPU speed/power is way more important for what you're doing than the fanciest video card out there. The only times I personally have seen gain by an extreme video card is in games and extensive video playback (like doing 1080p video right now). When I do video editing using iMovie, it's my CPU that seems to bottleneck the system.

Benchmarks shows that 4850 (it's the mobility version :() and GT130 (aka 9800M GTS) are almost similar, so ATI won't give you lots of extra power, but it does some, especially in gaming.

I went for GT130 and I've been happy. It's fast enough
