The laptop also has a single USB-C with DP Alt mode with the only other port as 3.5mm jack out.

Is there no dock that takes the USB-C DP Alt mode and converts it into Thunderbolt 3 signal?

🥺

That's not a thing that can exist. The oversimplified explanation is that Thunderbolt is more or less like the PCIe bus in a desktop computer.
If you intend to keep the 12" MacBook, save some money and just get a 4k display.

Thanks. sucks to be me.
5K display is about to be delivered to use with my work laptop windows 10 which has Thunderbolt 4!

Perhaps I could try and sell this MacBook 12, use the proceeds with a top to up get one of these M1 laptops. or even a Mac Mini.

4K monitor both old and new versions support USB-C DP Alt mode. Which all three versions of Macbook 12 inch 2015, 2016 and 2017 had support for.

5K monitor though, only the newest version of the monitor had support for DP Alt mode. There are two versions of it - the newer 27MD5KL supports 5K (via Thunderbolt 3) and (via DisplayPort), and the 27MD5KA (older revision) only supports Thunderbolt 3. (All three versions of Macbook 12 inch 2015, 2016, 2017 do not have support for Thunderbolt.

If you have the original version, you cannot run these monitors using a DisplayPort connection at all. The old 5k version monitor will ONLY accept a Thunderbolt 3 signal.

For posterity. :)
