I know this is like flogging a dead horse, but these rumours have been around since day one, and it's always coming out 'next quarter'.

My pb 12" is beginning to lose its value and I don't want to wait around for an ultraportable until it's worth only a couple hundred quid - if anyone has been following the info about this could you tell me if it's a good idea to forget about it and just buy a 15" MBP?

It is very likely that Apple will develop an ultraportable, eventually. It could be tomorrow, or the next Tuesday, or the next one. Nobody knows. I'd expect something around Macworld 2008, but that's just a guess. If you really want to replace your powerbook, the current laptops from Apple are really great, too. But if you must have an ultraportable, you'll be playing the waiting game.

I think the market for it is definitely still there--many are hanging on to their 12" PowerBooks for the sole reason that there honestly isn't a complete, viable replacement at the moment. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure that we'll be seeing an ultra-portable MacBook Pro anytime soon. When the original MBP came out, local tech writer Julio Ojeda-Zapata (yourtechweblog.com) supposedly talked with an Apple press contact regarding a possible 12/13" MBP, but was told that the product line was being discontinued. This was obviously over a year ago, but it's still something to think about.
