So, I thought I had tried all the IO on this rescued cMP 4,1, but only got around to trying to eject the CD/DVD drive tray a little while ago.

I've tried all the usual things - eject key, Command-e, running the eject thing on the command line.

I can hear the drive trying, but it won't open the door and pop out. System info sees the drive.

Guess I am a little stumped. Do I tear into the drive bay?

Suggestions?

Ok, I pulled out the drive and cleaned out the MASSIVE dust bunnies in and around the drive. And vacuumed out the drive area....apparently it was the lack of cleaning over the last 13 years that just finally took it's toll.

I got it to work ONCE...and now it won't cooperate. Hmmmm....WD40?

How often you need to use the super drive? If only need it rarely, you can manually pull down the door to let the tray eject when you need to use it.

I would mainly use it to rip some more of my massive CD collection or maybe watch an old DVD on occasion. Primarily just want everything to work, if I can get it going.

Doing a little investigation, I think I figured out the problem. There is a small rubber belt inside the drive that drives the eject mechanism. I think that belt has stretched enough over time to make it hard for the drive to eject.

I’m sure there is a source for the belts somewhere, but no luck finding one yet. On eBay there are lots of listings for similar belts for Xbox drives. Wonder if they fit this drive?

drutil eject

If that’s doesn’t work, your optical drive is probably damaged.
Yes, I tried that. Heard the drive try to eject, but no success.

Took the drive out, opened it up and found that weak belt.

Cleaned it all up the best I could and put it back together, and now it ejects a little better.

Still wish I could find a source for a new belt that is speced for that drive.

I’ve ordered some DVD drive belts off eBay. They are spec’ed for the original Xbox drive, which apparently fails with worn belts. Will report back after I get them and give them a try.
