Unable to create encrypted image?

I suspect this may be a serious bug in 10.10's Disk Utility application , creating encrypted images is impossible. It happens on both my iMac and my MacBook both of which were setup as new systems. (Erased and installed Yosemite from scratch) Any time i attempt to create an encrypted image i get this error:

"Unable to create NAME.dmg (Inappropriate IOCTL for device)"

If i try to create an unencrypted disk image it works fine, heck if i run the following in terminal that gets around the problem: hdiutil create -encryption AES-256 -stdinpass /Volumes/Mac\ System\ Disk/System\ Backups/Desktop/Macintosh\ HD.dmg -srcdevice /dev/disk1s2

Has anyone else experienced this problem with Disk Utility and if so, is it fixable? I'd like to know what the error even means, searching it up only gave me people having trouble with Linux and scripting, which i am not doing.

Edit: It is worth noting that this error only seems to occur if im trying to make an image of any attached disk. Whether its a USB or Hard Disk. Creating a blank encrypted image works fine so not sure whats going on. Also, when attempting to image a drive i have made sure its not in use by Finder or any other application by unmounting the device.

i just tested on Yosemite and it worked okay for me.

I plugged in a USB key formatted to Untitled. I selected Untitled in Disk Util then went to File menu then New disk image from Untitled and got the dialogue box to select name and location. In that box I chose the options in my screenshot and followed the prompts for a password and it worked fine.

Made the encrypted ~16GB DMG on my desktop.

The difference here is that im trying to make a read only, compressed image of a drive whereas your doing read/write. If i do a read/write encrypted image it seems to work. I dont get it... This worked perfectly in Mavericks.

So what im doing is this:

Select drive i want to make image of.

Press New Image button

Select Compressed as image format

Select level of encryption (Error occurs on both)

Type in password for account (Yes, i am admin)

Then i receive the error mentioned.

I'm assuming its a weird bug because its happening on both of my systems which were setup as new, no migration or anything.

I just went through what you described exactly following your post step by step and it worked fine.

What format is the disk? I'm using a 16GB USB key in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format as the source.

Then i am a bit baffled as to why its not working for me -.-

I've attached a video showing this problem, in hope that someone can assist. I'm ok typing the terminal commands to do this task, just thought i could get the easier route back.

Also, this happens on all formats, whether its FAT, NTFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The video only shows FAT and NTFS though, i cant exactly try imaging the Macintosh HD while the system is booted
I am going to copy my data off my USB drive though, format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), copy the data back and try the imaging again but i doubt it'll make a difference.

The Console doesnt appear to have any useful information about this error either, the drives are all healthy too.

I just figured it out. I notice in your vid you are clicking the New Image icon in the toolbar. If I do that, I get the same error. But if I make the new image by clicking the File menu then New disk image from disk or folder and it works perfectly. Try it with the menu instead of the toolbar icon.

I'd suggest doing a screen recording of both methods, then send via bugreport.apple.com or via the Feedback Assistant (if you're a public beta tester) - Apple needs to know about this.

If either approach doesn't work, go to: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

You can't upload the videos on the feedback webpage, but at least give them the steps taken.
