This is a very strange issue. I have my mail app set up for an online provider. Sending/receiving is fine, but when I open my email it says my inbox has 9999 messages, 2242 unread. The main issue is that now, for some reason, when I delete emails from my inbox they disappear, then reappear the next time I open email or if it checks for new emails. I had a vendor-provided email but they apparently got tired of handling that and sent it to AOL. It's still my original email address but it's now AOL online. I heard rumors that AOL has outsourced that email to a 3rd party but I'm not sure. At any rate, is there a setting in the Mail app where I can tell it to allow me to delete messages locally? I've never had this issue and I've been using Macs for MANY years. Thanks in advance.

What are your "host name" settings at Mail>Settings>Accounts>Server Settings?
I don't have those exact settings. If I go to Mail, Preferences, Accounts, and select AOL under server settings it just has the default AOL settings, as in it says "AOL", and that's it. I used to have actual server settings in for the older versions of Mac. I was told we no longer need them for Monterey and newer since AOL is embedded as an option. The top picture is the full list of options when I click on the AOL in server settings.

This sounds like your trash folder is connected to a folder name that does not exist on the server (any more).

Either re-create that folder or

1. go to settings > acconts
2. select the account on the left
3. click on the middle tab (i have a German UI, si not sure what it’s called in English)
4. select another folder for the mailbox for deleted emails (roughly in the middle row)

Thanks I'll try that! It could very well be the problem since my ISP dumped our email off to AOL and AOL apparently outsourced it to a 3rd party.
