Installing Yosemite on a external 1 GB USB 3.0 drive connected to a late 2012 iMac with 8 GB RAM. Download and install up to point where it says installing and will take 22 minutes. At the end od the 22 minutes, reboots and then asks which disk to install on and then says installing and will take 22 minutes etc. Can not get beyond this point. The files for Yosemite appear to be on the target drive. If I select the external drive as the startup disk, will boot to the internal Mavericks disk instead.Have also reset the NVRAM. What else can I do?

I did the partition on the external drive again, deleted the install download and completed a new download of Yosemite. The install progressed to the same point as before. Everything looked normal until the auto-reboot after the install sequence. After the reboot, it went back to the install sequence where it asks you which disk you want Yosemite insalled on. When I look at the target drive, it appears the Yosemite files are there, but the installer will not progress to the next step. And when I do a boot holding down the option key, the boot volume where I tried to install Yosemite does not show up as a boot option. It does show up as an option when I do the reboot from within the installer. The drive does mount and appears to function normally otherwise. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried it on a non-partitioned external drive? I had an issue with this for some reason. When I installed on a non-partitioned 64gb SanDisk USB 3 stick, it worked perfectly on my 2013 MBA.
My first attempt was with a Patriot Supersonic Magnum USB 3 256GB 8 channel flash drive that is lightening fast in my MBA with Mavericks. I tried it partitioned and it was horrid. Slow, beach balls every time I clicked on anything, but at least it did let me install.
Next, I tried a 64Gb SanDisk Extreme stick not partitioned and it is working flawlessly. Strange. Had to redownload fresh copies of both the Public beta and DP5 for it to work though.
Is this a USB "stick" drive? I had problems (slowness) when I installed to a USB 3.0 USB stick. I wound up buying this and it runs fine now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CG5EF8K/
