"Unable to open this mailbox" IMAP error in Tiger Mail

A lot of you are Uni students, so I figure maybe somebody has come across this problem before. My school uses an exchange server for its email, but Mail only allows one exchange account. Which means for my other account, I have to use IMAP.

The problem comes in the fact that the accounts have MANY public folders that I don't have access to. And Mail insists on trying to open these folders anyways when it traverses the hierarchy.

Anyways, I get the error: Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server "exchange". The server error encountered was access denied.

Any ideas?

Don't Know If This Will Help...

I'm not 100% sure if this will help you, but I was getting the same error where I work. I switched to POP instead of EXCHANGE and got the same message. I was fed up with it at the time, so I just clicked through to see what would happen, and my mail got dumped into my inbox anyway. Since I've got my mail now, I haven't really gone back to check it with EXCHANGE, but you never know, it might work if you just fill out all the information and hope for the best.

Thanks for your suggestion. So switching it to POP worked for you? I'm afraid I'll lose my public folders with that, do you still see them at all?

Right now, I've come up w/the fix of setting a path prefix, but now I can't have any drafts, can't see sent mail and can't see my public folders...hmm...

my school offered office X for $5 through a microsoft partnership, might check to see if you can get it free/cheap or if you already have it use entourage for your mail. entourage plays nice with exchange.

Wow, that's a great deal your school offers you!

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately my school is very anti-Mac. So they tend not to offer any software that is for the Mac

I just got done fixing this problem on another girl's computer at our Uni help desk.

Here's what you need to do:

Under your username for your computer, go to Library. In that, go to Mail, then go to the account that you set up. Click on that and go to Public Folders. Once you're in Public Folders, delete everything that's inside. Once you've done that, go up a level, and on that folder, change the access level to "no access."
