I've got an M1 Max Mac Studio and I've just tried connecting an extra flash drive into it for the first time, but it's not being read. It doesn't appear in Finder or in diskutil, but I do see it in System Information:

I've tried connecting it through two USB-C adapters in the front ports, one being an Apple adapter, and directly in the back, but the results are the same. What's odd is that if I connect a keyboard and DVD drive in the same ports, they work, but I've also tried two flash drives and neither are read. I assume they'd still appear in Disk Utility even if the file system was incompatible like before Ventura, but I'm pretty sure they're just FAT32. Any advice would be appreciated.

Just tried this 'cause it was disabled, but my QNAP DAS is still the only external disk

I could see a single flash drive as problematic, but two? Before you go down a USB rabbit hole, I'd suggest rebooting the Studio.

Yeah, I did before posting this. I tested a third drive just in case. I don't know if the other devices I have connected have any effect

I tried one of the drives on an M1 MBP and it instantly appears. So weird. Guess the Studio could be defective? I hadn't tried connecting a flash drive before now, but it reads the DAS fine, which is also over USB-C

Just wondering...

Are you using Ventura?

Doesn't Ventura have some new option that requires the user to "grant access" to USB devices (like flash drives) BEFORE they're recognized?

See this URL:
I am and I had actually checked the Security pane just in case before seeing this, but I don't see the option and I never get the pop-up when connecting the devices: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/allow-accessories-to-connect-mchlf779ae93/mac. The drives do appear in Finder when booting in Safe Mode, though. I created a new user to eliminate any software issues, but they still didn't appear then in a normal boot

This article suggests it only affects MacBooks: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213430
