Unable to read SD cards...

In July we purchased 3 17" MacBook Pro's. We are photographers and have been very happy with them except that we can not download images from 1Gb or 2Gb Secure Digital cards. We tried several different USB card reads and they could read compact flash cards but not SD cards. Using the same readers and the same cards on a PC laptop (Toshiba Tecra) and both the CF and SD cards could be read. The cards are reformated before each use in the camera that they are used in.

I can't seem to get a answer about what to do. We have a Windows partition on all three computers and the SD cards will not read there either. Two of the MacBooks have Leopard and one still has Tiger. Any ideas?
