just to test it out I requested the desktop site of Macrumors in Safari and it worked fine. However, I couldn't figure out a way to return to the mobile site; there isn't an option to request mobile site and it didn't work when I 'requested desktop site' again.

Any ideas? Thanks

Swipe back to the mobile site. This works on a handful of sites I visit. After requesting the desktop site, you should be able to swipe back to the mobile site. If not, you're cached into the desktop version...

For Macrumors it's easy. Go to the bottom of the site and select the mobile theme. For sites like Amazon you're screwed. You have to go into Safari's settings and delete the cache (specifically if you wish). Safari really needs a request mobile site feature.
