Someone bought my friend an Iphone in USA and brought it to Europe. The iPhone is not activated, its brand new and I cant use it here because iTunes doesnt recognize the local sim. What should I do? please help me.

Jailbreak, and be sure to check the "Unlock" box.

Afterward, simply insert a local GSM sim card, and it should be good to go.

Your only option then is to use a sim card modifier, until the software unlock is available, but everything that I've read indicates that reliability is spotty at best.

Good luck.

Like a rebelsim card? but the phone is not even activated... Don't i need an At&t card to activate it?

yes, like a rebelsim, there are a few alternatives in that department..
it is strange that your friend got you one that's not been activated though, was it in its box?
I think you have to activate it instore, whether it's in an ATT or Apple Store, doesn't matter

Do you think after all this time that a software unlock will be possible?

I don't think a rebelsim costs that much, the joy of using an iPhone for an extra month, let's say,is worth it
still, how did you manage to get one without a contract/activation in store?

My friend has a cousin that is a pilot at the portuguese airlines and bought it in USA. That's something I am also curious... How did he get the iPhone with no contract... Probably he bought a stolen one. I have an iPhone and that one is original and was completly new.
