uncoded web design critique

Look at the over all feel, the colors used, the logotype, the layout, is the photograph suitable?

There are a lot of stuff to critique!
 
The buttons at the top (print, screen, etc.) look too plain and boxy to fit in with the rest of the layout. The logo's metallic look doesn't seem like it fits in too well, either. Other than that, I think it's pretty nice.

I agree with the comments on the buttons - I'm no design guru but they just look like default buttons from some sort of website wizard. The rest looks good IMHO.

When I do critiquing I look at usability, accessibility, web standards, etc., which can't be determined from a picture. All you have is "design" not "web design." That was my point. How good a web site is depends on how the user interacts with it, not how it looks.
 
Your text is a little drowned out. A very important thing to consider in design is where your eye first goes when you go to the page. Mine goes to the lightbulb. The text around the light bulb should stand out a little more, and the bulb should be made a little more like the background to stand out less (or remove it and place a logo there or something)

My opinions:

I agree with some of the concerns expressed here about the buttons - they do just look like white boxes slapped on. Personally, I would keep the same design they currently use, but make the button background a lighter version of the background they are sitting on - to make it look like they are part of it, not glued on top.

The left sidebar: I like the light bulb. Its a nice image. However, all the text looks a little washed out and low-contrast. Maybe boost it a little bit so its a bit more readable? Also in your bulletpoints, the word "Menu" is capitalised when no others are. I'd correct that ;)

Apart from that, there isnt much to say. As a previous poster has mentioned, there is no actual site to critique, just the design as shown in the image. I would take on board what gets said here and tweak the design, and then knock up a prototype in (x)html. I'm sure we'd all be willing to look it over again and give more comments if that would help you.

I agree, it looks kind of boxy. It looks nice but doesn't really break the clutter.

I took many of your suggestions and made changes to the layout.

Remember, this is strictly the design phase, coding and building will come later. Keeping that in mind, take a look at the next evolution.

Ok, I made another layout.

Took out the light bulb all together.
There are no graphics yet since the Flash animation and the portfolio itself will contain the graphics. Don't want to take attention away from these 2.

I'm sorry, but i don't really think any of them work. I mean...

menu: buttons are just too large, the boxes are a little crazy and it just doesn't seem to fit.

logo: not a bad logo, i just don't understand the effects applied to it. What's the purpose of the Metallic? What's the concpet behind it? I mean, your name is Conceptual Design, but i see no concept in this design (or the rest of the site)

Colors: Are very freshmen designed "business" colors. You've got a safe grey/blue color and a complimentary red/orange. i don't see how a design company wouldn't do something more sophisticated than dull complimentary.

layout: Is messy. The uninspiring background image, the transparent boxes with odd wholes in them, too many drop shadows, and other effects that arent necessary. And why is it so tall? Does it need to be? a lot of views are going to have to scroll, which i hate unless it HAS to be. And finally, your font choice (Futura?) is not a websafe font, so that will probably either change or your page will be nothing but images.

It lacks any sense of typograhic hierarchy, the elements on the page are competing for screen real estate which means it's hard to distinguish any particular element.

It kind of reminds me of Make It Bigger Cream
 
It's OK at best.

You should only have one large graphic per page and it should be at least twice the size of the next biggest one.
 
Sorry, don't mean to crap on your "site" but what exactly are you showing us here? :confused:

3 "designs" of cluttered boxes/terrible layout, naff graphics, with wording on it claiming that you're a web/print design company with years of experience - yet you're asking people here for feedback on this?

I'm really not meaning to sound rude but it's pretty awful. Just being honest.

Make the overall container smaller. Lose some of the boxes/background clutter. Less is more.

I have to say that version 4 is a minor improvement over version 3. Very glad the ugly red-brown boxes from under the menu items have gone (apart from the resume one in the bottom corner), but still not sure why the menu stands out so much more than the site's "identity". Still a confusing layout. What is the box on the left going to contain? What will change when you click on the various menu items?

I'm not claiming to be a web/graphic/print designer or whatever so feel free to ignore my comments; I'm just saying what I see.


I'd also suggest a bit of Lorem Ipsum, rather than:

Print, screen, and contact links will generate different page with a different color scheme. Blog Link will go to my blog.

Every box on the screen is responsible for different content that will change with each 3 pages.

The 1st box on the left is a flash animation container. showing content that will correspond with the chosen page title.

The box below it is an iframe containing text page description.

The large rectangular box on the right is the graphical content box. It will contain thumbnails for print and screen and also contain the from for the contact section.

The box below it is the text explanation of the graphical content box above it.
