Understanding Back ups

I read that I could use a disk image of .... my contacts on another hard drive in the Mac Pro 8 core.

There are too many things I don't know to begin the task.

Will I have to reformat the H D I want to use just to store the image on this disc [ 200+ gb free space.

I was formatted Mac Os Journaled os X.4.11.

Is there an easier way to get the Contacts transferred directly from H D to H D both in the 8 core?

Sorry for my poor English, I couldn't understand some details.

Which OS you are using?

Which Mac you are actually using?

You just want to transfer your contact list?

Or you want to back up your HDD?

Hello don't sweat the english, Like your msg., most of that info is in the signature at the bottom of this msg. But I listed the OS by name not number. It's 10.10.5 I appreciate your interest.
