Hey all,

So I am looking at this setting below, trying to understand it. Sunset to Sunrise means that screen will become warm when there is a sunset in my area and will turn back normal in the morning with the sunrise. What I am a little confused about, is the turn-on until sunrise manual button, or vice versa when it's daytime. Does it have to be ticked for it to work as intended? What is it for? I have also noticed that during the day I selected the sunset to sunrise and it turned the screen warm straight away, and by far it was not sunset yet.

Any help appreciated much, I am returning to mac from a long break. :)

Let's say it is 2.30pm where you are. Sunset till sunrise would be 7pm till 7am (or whatever the sunset and sunrise times are), but if you check that then its on from 2:30pm until 7am.

Thing is, for example, I turned my mac on, at 8 pm, which is past sunset, the night shift is on. Now, I want it to work normally from sunset to sunrise, if I go and untick the manual option, even though it's past the sunset, it turns it off. Is it bugged or am I confused? Location permissions have been granted and it should work.

So upon reflection the controls make sense if you understand that unchecking the checkbox allows you to manually override the dropdown. So use the dropdown and only uncheck the box if you want it off despite the dropdown saying it should be on.

And it looks like if you have Dark Mode set to auto, the NigthShift dropdown also controls that.

So basically, to make it run as intended, sunset to sunrise automatically, leave the dropdown to sunset to sunrise but leave the manual box unchecked. I actually, did it now, left the box unchecked, first it turned the night light off, then on again after a tap for some reason. I will see how that will actually perform tomorrow morning and how it will perform towards the night without touching it, below is how I left it, because logic says, that sunset to sunrise should operate by auto, and checking manual box turns it on forcibly, if you want it a little earlier. I could be wrong, but damn Apple needs to fix this:))))))

Checkbox labels tell you what happens when the option is selected/checked, and in this case the label is "Turn on until sunrise". So when you select S2S it is selected by default because it will be on until sunrise, unless you manually override S2S.

But yeah I think that Apple could have thought about the working better or provide additional feedback as to the checkbox's behavior.
agreed, left it as you advised, will report back :) I got a lot of learning to do moving to a M1 mac ...
