I'm using Face ID to unlock and Apple Pay with my iPhone 13 Pro, and the only option for "Require Passcode" is "Immediately". I understand this is expected, but I don't understand what "Immediately" means. I don't have to enter my passcode every time I unlock, which is good, because if I did, it would make using Face ID to unlock pointless. This leaves me wondering what condition "Immediately" applies to. Any ideas?

What I would like is for the iPhone to require passcode when it hasn't been unlocked for a configurable amount of time, or even a fixed amount of time, like 4 hours, but the former isn't a feature anymore, and the latter isn't happening.

ETA: The iPhone User Guide says:

"For additional security, however, you must always enter your passcode to unlock your iPhone under the following conditions:... You haven’t unlocked your iPhone with the passcode in the last 6.5 days, AND (my caps and bold) you haven’t unlocked it with Face ID or Touch ID in the last 4 hours."

It's the "AND" that's the problem. I mean, suppose you're incapacitated, and it's less than 6.5 days since you've used your passcode to unlock. They'll be able to use Face ID without you being able to consent.

“And” means also.
If either condition is true the passcode must be entered. This security feature was implemented in later versions of iOS for your own safety. Be glad it exists.

If you are worried about unauthorized access via FaceID, turn off the feature and stick with an Alphanumeric passcode. That way, you don't have to try and parse conjunctions and other words in Apple's documents and thus get overly focused on something that isn't mean to be dissected to the third degree.

This requirement is on the same bullet point compared to the other requirements, so both conditions need to be true.

6.5 days is 156 hours. Let's say you unlock your iPhone using Face ID at the following hours since the last passcode unlock: 155, 157, 160, 162, 164, 170. In this example, the passcode will be required at hour 170, because that's the first time 6.5 days has passed AND 4 hours has elapsed since the last Face ID unlock.

Also, if you turn off Face ID and don't have any cards in your wallet, then there will be more options under the "Require Passcode" setting.
