MAC mini 10.6.5 server with SMB as a simple file sharing server for WORD documents.

if the Guest mode is OFF, any Windows 7 workstation cannot execute NET commands

example:

C:\Users\timeclock>net view
System error 1326 has occurred.

Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

the W7 has a valid username with password so it should execute the command with such privileges, right ?

So why does SMB guest mode needs to be ON for it to work ? This is directly related to computer browsing issue with Windows on the network as described here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2651459&tstart=0

what is the best setting in ADVANCED tab ? do i need need BOTH WMB and DMB enabled ?

SMB log WORKGROUP master browser not resolving properly ?

this log is puzzling:

Code:
[2010/11/18 18:30:25, 0, pid=153] /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.5/samba/source/nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:dump_workgroups(282)
  dump_workgroups()
   dump workgroup on subnet 192.168.0.2: netmask=255.255.255.240:
  	WORKGROUP(1) current master browser = SERVER
  		SERVER 408c9a03 (Mac OS X Server)
  		TIMECLOCK-PC 40011003 ()
[2010/11/18 18:30:25, 0, pid=153] /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.5/samba/source/nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:dump_workgroups(282)
  dump_workgroups()
   dump workgroup on subnet  UNICAST_SUBNET: netmask=    192.168.0.2:
  	WORKGROUP(1) current master browser = UNKNOWN
  		SERVER 40899a03 (Mac OS X Server)
[2010/11/18 18:30:32, 0, pid=153] /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.5/samba/source/nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:dump_workgroups(282)
  dump_workgroups()

  	WORKGROUP(1) current master browser = UNKNOWN
  		SERVER 40899a03 (Mac OS X Server)

it alternates few times from SERVER (yes!) to UNKNOWN (why?)

if i run LANscanner, the server shows as MB.

Code:
LANscanner v1.3 - ScottiesTech.Info

Scanning LAN...

SERVER            192.168.0.2  00-00-00-00-00-00  WORKGROUP  MASTER
TIMECLOCK-PC      192.168.0.3  C4-46-19-A3-43-60  WORKGROUP

Press any key to exit...

Just to clarify a little bit, as I'm not familiar with the inner workings of Samba, but are you saying that the Windows clients can still authenticate to the SMB file shares on this server with guest access off, but domain browsing is broken?

I understand there are 2 places to enable guest access. one is for what i believe general access. if i turn it off, windows have hard time seeing each computer on the network (also the server won't list the windows machines in the finder)

the individual shares do not have guest access allowed. the server still is a Workgroup master browser. i just don't know if i need both domain and workgroup master.

the log above is also confusing to me, why it says once server, once unknown
