If you haven't upgraded to 10.3.4 (given that you're using Panther), do so first. (If on Jaguar, upgrade to 10.2.8.) Also, install all Security Updates that Software Update will allow you to.

Sometimes (but usually it doesn't work) repairing permissions from the Jaguar/Panther disk helps fix some problems. Try that...especially if you haven't done so in a while. (I might need to do that myself...I haven't done a repair permissions since April.)

Also, have you tried trashing the preference files for each of the apps that keep quitting on you. Rarely that works, but try it. For the apps that keep crashing, make sure you have the latest version of them. Otherwise, update first. What specific apps keep crashing? If iTunes has crashed on you anytime recently, then we've got a big problem!

If the advice here (and from other posters) that you get doesn't help you, post your question here in the Apple section of Help to get additional details. If you decide to do so, also provide the exact operating system number (i.e. 10.3.4).

yea im running panther, and its a new install, in order to try and rectfy the problem.

Gulp, itunes has crashed on me, actually it just froze my cpu, but generally it can be any app. not usually safari or mail but quicktime, i tunes and the occasional game.

permissions have been rebuilt and as its a new reinstall there should be no reason to trash any prefs?

i get the feeling your going to say its a hardware problem, although there is not much more i can do other than send it in to apple

Oh, F***! iTunes crashing? That's like the only Apple iApp that has been deemed indestructible (at least in my view). There have been other posts on these forums about iTunes crashing. So try searching the forums for people that had similar issues (apps crashing, iTunes crashing) and see, within the resulting threads, if a resolve was found.

I have no idea if it's a hardware issue or not...I'm going through some troubleshooting steps that might be quick fixes. If you're seriously worried that the issue is hardware-related, then, as I suggested in my above post, post your concerns over at TheTechPub.

You shouldn't worry too much about that message: if an app is going to crash, that is the most common error message it'll produce.

However, what should worry you is that apps are crashing with increasing regularity... That's bad. It definitely sounds software-related, though. I know it's a clean install, but...

Is it just a few apps? Try trashing their .plist files. If this doesn't help or it's system wide, gulp, you may have to do another clean install.

argh my computer (eMac) just started developing this problem! Safari was quitting so often that I had to switch to Firefox. Then Mail started crashing and then iTunes whenever I select the Music Store so this really seems to be Apple software only as I am not having any other programs crash on me. I have trashed the plist for Safari and reinstalled the version. I also trashed the plist for Mail and it hasn't quit on me so far. I wonder what is up?

problem appears to be fixed... I got a warning about a full hard drive so I freed up a gig of space and now iTunes will go to the music store and I'm typing in Safari right now so if anyone is having unexpected quits, check your hard drive space
