Unfortunate iPhone bug...

Found a weird (and unfortunate given my user name) iPhone bug. Looks like its a bug with their word/typing check function since it doesn't offer an alternate word...

Try typing my user name in any application without using the delete key: "krsnet"

Good luck with the "t"...:(

Sliding over the "t" doesn't work and reveals that you also couldn't select E, A, or D. Obviously tried that first...

None of the iPhone's at the Apple store worked either so I'm guessing there's none work...

I think it does qualify as a bug in the spell check function - when it detects a word it doesn't recognize, its supposed to offer a guess at the real word...not so here. I can't imagine a case where they would need to truly prevent the press of a letter key like this so its gotta go into the 'bug' category - not that I really want to debate semantics.
 
Works fine on my iPhone. I think he/she just wanted their name typed on people's iPhones for no reason.

Weird bug. Some autocorrection quirk.
 
Very strange, why would some iPhones do it and others not?

For the record: when it try it on mine it comes either "Krsney" or "Krsner" even if I tap dead-on with the t. The iPhone's typing correction - or at least mine and krsnet's, anyway - presumes for some reason that you want to type either of those ltters instead, and thus expands the tap region for those two keys accordingly. In theory this is exactly how iPhone's typo-correction algorithm is supposed to function, obviously to the chagrin of the OP.

Is it a bug? If it affects one person but on the whole greatly enhances typing for everyone else, then no, I can't call it a bug. An unfortunate annoyance for you, maybe.

Nah - I'm really curious about the phones that work though. None of the phones at the Apple store worked either...

What application are you using? Notes and forms in Safari all fail with the same issue... It does work fine in the contacts and (I assume) the calendar, but the places where I regularly have to type the word, I can't...

What program are you trying in? I did it in the notes app. First try, and it worked fine. I'll get a picture if you really don't believe me. I'll have to find another camera phone around the office to take it though.

How are you typing it exactly? You know you can hover over the letters and it won't actually use it until you let go right? So just hover over the r and t keys until you see "t" come up large. Then let go.

When I hold and "hover", my phone skips over the "T". It also skips the A, E, and D keys, but all other keys work.

If yours really works when typing in sequence (no backspace used during typing), e-mail or PM me. I want to find out what's different since I tried it on multiple phones at the Apple store (as did the "Genius'") without any luck.

Google or any web-form fails as well.

Gotta disagree there - the feature shouldn't prevent other key presses and its designed to offer an alternate solution when the feature is active that can be canceled by a tap. In this case, there's no alternate solution and no way to type the "t" without typing any letter other than "t", "a", "e", or "d" and back-spacing. The feature offers alternate solutions, it doesn't prevent keystrokes.
 
didn't work for me... in the notes program. perhaps it depends on different apps too.
 
That's weird! It just won't accept the T--the phone jumps directly between R and Y. As you press down on the T, hold your finger down and move back and forth--you'll see that either R pops up or Y, but never T. After the mandatory typo, hitting delete seems to "break the spell" and it then accepts the T, no problem.

I did not notice this before, but maybe this explains some of my typos--I hit the correct letter, but the phone typed out the letter on one side or the other.

Edit: I duplicated this in the notes program ^^^
 
i just tried it in notes and I was unable to type a t without typing another letter and using backspace. very strange.

Yes it works for me. Without a backspace or anything, just typing "krsnet" straight through without messing up. I'll take a video when I get off work later today if you want. I have only tried it really in the notes app though, I could try safari also if you want.
 
Okay, that is odd. I can add your name as a contact. But I cannot even get it to recognise that I did that (like it does for all my other contacts). Way interesting. I wonder what other words produce the same bug.

Actually, the feature DOES prevent keystrokes in certain cases, and is intended to. This video explains how it works:

Skip to about 2 minutes, 30 seconds in, and watch the word "time" example. This describes exactly what you're seeing here. Whether it's a bug or not we can agree to disagree on, but I can tell you with certainty that this was intentionally designed-in.

I'll also speculate and say it was probably done this way because in your case, tapping to reject a suggestion would not save you any tap-strokes as compared to hitting the delete key. tapping to reject a suggestion prevents you from having to hit delete multiple times. But in the "krsnet" case, you're already at the end of the word, and it shouldn't matter either way whether you tap-to reject or tap-to-delete.

Actually, I just tried this. I created a contact called "Krsnet Krsnet", and now in Notes app and Safari, it's guessing I want to type "krsnet" when I just enter "krsn". This could be your solution if you type that a lot.

You could probably also enter krsnet@someaddress.com under yourself as a contact and it would probably still guess krsnet. That would only be helpful, assuming it works, if you don't want a random contact "Krsnet Krsnet" to show up on your list.

I already have a few "krsnet@..." defined in my personal contact.

Just tried creating a "krsnet krsnet" contact name and it still wouldn't work in Notes or in Safari-Google. Tried to sync and do a full reboot and it still wouldn't work....

If you say you can type it without doing a typo first, I believe you and don't need to see a video, but I'd be real curious to know more about your iPhone.

My iPhone's info (Settings-General-About) are:
Version: 1.0 (1A543a)
Model: MA712
Its an 8Gb, but I can't imagine a reason the memory size would cause a difference in this case.

What are yours?
