If you've installed (or continued to use) the NightOwl app since its purchase by "new owners" last year, do yourself a favor and uninstall it completely and immediately. The app was once a staple for switching between light and dark modes on MacOS, but it has recently been corrupted to serve -- without notice and/or express permission -- as part of a botnet, opening an HTTP port on your machine.

Reddit user LMGN recently posted his findings on reddit and has quite a good writeup on the problem here: https://robins.one/notes/uninstall-the-nightowl-app-now.html

"Apple seems to agree that something shady is afoot; the company revoked the NightOwl developer’s code-signing certificate, forcing the developer to remove NightOwl’s download link from its site."
"So is NightOwl malware or not? In our brief testing, we have not observed direct evidence that the software itself is overtly malicious or directly dangerous to users, so it does not appear to meet the strictest definition of harmful malware."
"Should I uninstall NightOwl? How can I do so?"
