Uninstalling Programs on MacBook

Hey!

I want to uninstall this program called "StuffIt" that I don't think I really need on my Macbook (does anyone know anything about this program and if I would need it?) - there doesn't seem to be an option in system preferences that allows you to delete/uninstall certain programs....how would I do this?

Stuffit has been good in the past for unzipping different compressed filetypes, but much of that has been incorporated into the OS itself. Personally, I keep it around just in case I need it, which is fairly rare.

That said, uninstalling applications in OS X is often as easy as dragging the program or folder to the trash. (Some programs with uninstallers, which you should use if it is provided, but most don't have them.) Just deleting the app might leave a couple of tiny preference files elsewhere on your system, but they do no harm, so you don't need to do anything about them. It you really want to get rid of those, just do a Spotlight search for the name of the program to find them. Alternatively, you can use a program like AppZapper to get rid of the program and all associated files all at once.

Stuffit files are compressed files, exactly like ZIPs or RARs. It used to be the most common compression format for the MacOS for downloaded files. Stuffit files have the extension of .sit or .sitx. If you come across any of these, you need Stuffit Expander to open them.

I wouldn't delete stuffit

I use it all the time, unless it's just a demo, I'd keep it.

It's nice to have options, and a lot of things you may download will be in .sitx format, and then you'll need to stuff it to open it...

Why do you want to delete it so bad?

Did they start including it again?

When I got my last Mac it wasn't included, I assumed because the OS handles so many file types now except for SIT and SITX.

It doesn't matter if you delete it because it's shareware and you can just download it again if you need it.

I dont know of any easy way to delete the preference files, which I believe would be in your home directory's library and also the root library, but I have never found it a problem to just leave them be (let them be?.... I have lived in the South for so long I don't remember proper English).

I'm new to Mac and I had the same question and didn't know that it was that easy to uninstall in mac.
I now find myself using Mac more than PC. I just love using my Skype on my Macbook with no wires hanging around and video chat with my friends over Yahoo with just the Macbook open. I wish it was cheaper long time ago. I always want to get one but it was always out of my price range.
