it was working between High Sierra MP3,1 & Big Sur MM8,1 .
11.6.5 on MM seemed to break it.
Signed in and out of Apple on both
Toggled WiFi & BT on both.
They are connected thru an unmanaged switch.
There is no checkbox for Handoff with High Sierra.
All I want is clipboard.
Ideas?

can you access www.icloud.com in safari on your High Sierra machine?

I'm going to bet no, and that you're suffering the recent High sierra expired security certificate. Were you able to sign back in to iCloud on high sierra? If you're signed in, are you able to access the account details in the cloud prefpane?

yes I can access icloud.com on the HS Mac.
and I can access the acct details of icloud from sys prefs and Safari.
Perhaps I'll toggle wifi & BT on both again.

Ok, so if the HS mac can load www.icloud.com in Safari, and the Account Details of the iCloud prefpane will load your information - next port of call would be to check if iCloud still shows the machine as logged in. If it is, a 4-bong NVRAM reset is usually an effective solution to glitched iCloud login.

Also, if the machine has been used with a different version of macOS, Sierra or Mojave, it can require a second restart after booting back to High Sierra, to re-enable BT/Wifi.

still no joy.
"suffering the recent High sierra expired security certificate."
I guess the other checks accounted for this change?

fixed. since HS is not supported on MP3,1, I installed HS with dosdudes patch. After a cache rebuild I ran:
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel - as per dosdude exit panel on the install.
That got me the shared clipboard again.
woo hoo!
