There is a wonderful book "The Art of Unix Programming" which explains very well, in the early chapters, what Unix is about.

It's an elegantly simple, atomic system - as opposed to say, shudder, the nightmare that J2EE is.

I am often perplexed by the problems I encounter in Unix, but I'm always delighted by the solutions.
