Long story short..

Got a new 3g iphone.
Activated it, working fine.
Used back-up of old iphone, new one starts acting weird.
Download 2.0 to do a restore.
Do restore, phone tries to activate again.
Get repetition of error (-9838)
Keep trying till suddenly my phone has opened up again. I can use it for calls and whatever, so I assume that's that. Notice all my data has gone, so attempt to sync.
Except now when i plug it in it hangs again on accessing itunes store, and then cuts out with an 'unknown error (-4)'
So now I can't sync it.

Is this a server overload or has itunes somehow broken the phone?

Ok well I guess they ran out of 9838s... that's a relief.

At least my phone makes calls I guess, but I still think it's pretty stupid that I can make calls, but I have to access the itunes store to be able to sync my mac to my phone (again). Well, on the other hand, it's not like i'm going to need my music tonight..

Try again tomorrow.

Same here. Though the phone service was triggered about 30 minutes ago, and the phone function works fine, but without connecting to iTunes, I can't sync with my 2.5 back-up. So it's a bare phone.

GPS works great. Pulsating blue dot from inside my top-floor apartment. Very cool.

Note: With your 2.0 phone attached, click on any selection under library or playlists in the source list of iTunes. Then click back to new iPhone in source list. This "resets" the request, so you don't have to wait for the time-out and error message.

I can't even get into my phone. It just has the Connect to iTunes picture, and that's it. And I get error -4 when I try to get onto iTunes.

Just got in and it's now restoring.
For some reason it forced a iTunes store sign up (CC info, address, etc.) You can skip this, and go directly to the restore process.

Cool thing: My 4GIG old iPhone isn't bricked. It's a perfectly good iPhone Touch (wi-fi still works).

Disappointed

Same error here. I can not get finish the process to update the 2.0 firmware on my 2gen iPhone. I think we have to try and try and try... I truly believe that the real problem is the overload. Jam! traffic.
