Unknown Installer appearing on desktop

A couple of times now I've had an Installer appear on the desktop without any kind of action from me.

The first time I just ejected it, now it's come back I'm really wanting to know what might be causing this?

When I open it and Get Info it doesn't reveal too much (to me).

Any thoughts on this? Would be much appreciated. I haven't installed anything outside Steam for a couple of weeks now, the only exception being Flash updates, could that be causing it? Or related to it in some way? I've had Flash Plugin crash on Safari since the latest update but it is working fine now.

Little more technical than I can grasp completely but it seems to suggest to me this was more serious than I had first imagined?

I had the same issue the past couple of days.

Unknown installer icon on desktop, double-click it and there is a "pkg" icon saying "click to install", or something along that line.

I found what I believe is the underlying cause -- an app which wants to install "something additional" to increase its features. The app can be set so as not to request this by going into the prefs and setting (or un-setting) a value.

I must be gettin' old, because for the life of me, I can't remember just which app that was!
And it was only yesterday that I solved it...

The same alert popped up again, today:
"Application is trying to install a new helper tool.
Type your password to allow this."
(Username is already entered, password text entry area is blank)
Two buttons below:
- Cancel
- Install Helper

I'm wondering if this had something to do with the last update of Adobe flash player.

This evening, I opened the Flash Player panel of System Preferences.
I clicked the "Advanced" tab.
In the "Updates" section of that panel, I normally keep checked, "Notify me to install updates".
I clicked the "check now" button, and -- crash! System Preferences just quit.

Did it a couple of times more and -- same quit.

I just happened to have a copy of the latest flash updater dmg on a USB flashdrive. I plugged that in, and opened the dmg, ran the installer once it mounted.

This seems to have successfully updated Flash, AND corrected the crashing with System Preferences.

Whether the generic "installer" icon reappears -- will have to wait and see..
