Hi
I have a 1st gen 2G iphone with 3.1 firmware that has never been unlocked / jailbroken / hacked.
Is it possible to unlock this at the moment for use on other networks? From searching the net it sounds like this is only posible if it was unlocked on 3.0 before?
I'm a noob at all this so please help or explain how this can be done.
Thanks.

None of the 3.0 stuff matters if you have a 2G.

I'm not so sure. I quote from the Dev-Team Blog:

"The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)"

You're quoting stuff related to the iPod Touch 2G. You have an iPhone 2G. ;)

And I quote:
iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.
