Hi, I'm new to the forum,

I just bought this iPhone 3g and it is jailbroken but not unlocked. I am trying to use my T-Mobile sim because the guy said it was "unlocked" but the phone says "invalid sim."

I am trying to unlock it so i can use it with T-Mobile so I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I have searched around Google and it seems that some require resets, but I would like input from people who know how to do it properly. I don't want to risk breaking the phone.

Basic details:
Version 2.2 (5g77) (NOT 2.2.1)
Firmware: 02.28.00
Cydia is installed.

I'm assuming that it's easy to unlock once it's jailbroken (based on my google research), but I'm new to the iPhone world.

Appreciate any help.

Seems that all you need to do is open Cydia and install yellowsn0w. Restart the phone and insert sim card.

Sounds like it's jailbroken, not unlocked. Download yellowsn0w and you should be ok since your baseband is the version it works with. :)

Side note, thanks for doing some Google research before popping on, most folks here will appreciate that. :)

So..... can yellowst0ne brick my iPhone?

Can I remove every trace of my iPhone ever having been unlocked?

Is it dangerous to download official programs etc. from iTunes if I am using yellowst0ne?

It's Yellowsn0w, not Yellowst0ne.;)
Yes, with a restore, there is no trace of your phone ever being unlocked.
You're fine when it comes to iTunes and all that junk as well. Nothing to worry about.

I was told that if you did anything with iTunes (updating it and such) it would lock the phone..?

But removing from Cydia then updating, or updating with jailbroken firmware won't lock the phone? Nor will downloading app store apps?
Cheers

EDIT: To clarify, I'm not gonna end up with an iPhone that won't work as usual or has irreparable damage, such as loss of iPhone support from Apple, if I do any of the things I've listed?

You void your warranty by jailbreaking.
If you ever need to send it in for repairs/ a replacement you will need to do a full restore and get rid of the jailbreak/software unlock.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I downloaded yellowsn0w and it works fine now. I was hesitant because I kept reading that iPhones froze or stopped working after trying to do this so I was taking precautions.

I have a 2.1 version too, I managed to trade my desktop for it. How do I upgrade to 2.2? When i connect it to iTunes it says the update will be to 2.2.1. I want to update it to 2.2 and unlock it (it already has Cydia) so I can sell it. Will Yellowsn0w work with 2.1?

You can use Pwnage tool to upgrade to 2.2.1 and then you can continue to run yellowsn0w. :)

hey guys i was if someone can give me a step-by-step of this.

It's 2.1 (Modem Firmware 02.11.07)
After using Pwnage tool, will i have Cydia installed?

1) Where do i get Pwnage Tool from? (I did a Google search, but I prefer a reliable link)

2) I know that after i get Cydia and use Pwnage to keep the 02.28 firmware, I just download yellosn0w.

3) I'm assuming Pwnage tool will "jailbreak" my phone? If not help please, I need clarification. Thanks.

Yep

Yes it will.

ok thanks. one more thing, I am downloading "'PwnageTool 2.2.5 for Mac OSX' is here SHA1 Sum - 8fe2f20c00f48b37d8262d6872a12166c6e165ba"
under the "Official Bittorrent Releases -" section from this page:

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/74278878/close-the-stable-door

Also planning on downloading "'QuickPwn 2.2.5 for Mac OSX' is here SHA1 Sum - 2f1353242ef10dc408e95786643e497fcd04e4ea" from the same page.

And under the sticky guide called "Reload this Page Pwnage Guide: PwnageTool/QuickPwn/WinPwn: Unlock and Jailbreak iPhone/3G" it says I need "iPhone 3G firmware is named 'iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw'" (for 2.1 version)

Does the PwnageTool I'm downloading from the "Dev-Team Blog" already have these files included? If not, where do I find the links?

Sorry for all the questions, better safe than sorry (aka brick phone).

As long as you have updated to 2.2.1 on an iPhone on YOUR iTunes, then you should have a copy of the 2.2.1 firmware on your computer and Pwnage Tool should find it automatically, if not you need to google to find a "2.2.1 iPhone 3G ipsw" because I don't think we can post links like that here

P.S. There is no way to brick your phone ;)

I DID IT! lol.

It's now a 2.2.1 with Modem Firmware 02.11.07

It installed Installer and Cydia.

Do I still need to run QuickPwn to "jailbreak" it? Or is it already jailbroken?

I want to run yellowsn0w and use it on T-mobile already.

It says on the Dev-Team blog that yellowsn0w will work only with "02.28.00"

How come I got 02.11.07 when I updated?

And how can I fix this?

Thanks for the previous responses.

You need to upgrade to stock 2.2 in iTunes. And then use pwnage tool to jailbreak your phone again. Then you can download yellowsn0w from this source: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ in cydia, and then the phone will be unlocked and ready for use.
