cheers..

the iclarified looks like my sort of level..!!

so pwnage is the one i use...?

i have not read all the iclarified properly yet, but am i right in thinking you should not update the software on the phone from apple after it has been unlocked?

Pwnage Tool on the Mac, to build a custom firmware... that's assuming your soon-to-be iPhone doesn't come with firmware 2.2.1 out of the box.
am i right in thinking you should not update the software on the phone from apple after it has been unlocked?
Indeed.

It's all explained on the Dev-Team Blog's site.

Indeed but although I don't know for sure I would imagine the new phones from Apple will be arriving with the 2.2.1 firmware pre-installed in which case you'll be out of luck. Best to check before purchase.

hi there.

just read the iclarified and heres what i understand..

pwnage to jailbreak to allow yellowsn0w to run.
yellowsn0w to allow my vodafone uk sim to work ok.

iclarified said that iphone with firmware 2.2.1 ( which i think is the latest? ) would br compatabile with the above..

anyone think not?

also what do i do about update to the firmware in the future, on the whole iphone and yellowsn0w?

cheers again..

As I said, it's all explained on the Dev Team's Blog :
The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.

If you've made it this far, then whenever there is a firmware update from Apple, you wait and see what the Dev Team say and come up with.
Bookmark their web site!!!

another question forgot to add..

whats the advantages / disadvantegs of unlocking a iphone with yellowsno0w as opposoedto a turbo sim or oher such sim card realted solutions..

and one more question..

what would happen to the unlocked/jailbroken iphone outside the vodafone uk network, would it just work ok as long as i have informed / changed details with vodafone to allow international roaming?

thnaks again!!!

so dZp...

just so i understand..

yellowsn0w works ok, but i just have to 'pwn' using a download of the latest apple firmware ( in this case 2.2.1 )

i am only asking this as i don't understand this statement..

" Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband "

so to reword that statement, you got to jailbreak the phone before using yellowsn0w ?

is that right?

cheers again!!!

i think i am answering my own questions, dZp !!

should have the read the blog like you said!!!

so i must use pwnage ( not qucikpwn ) and then check with dev team if updates come out!!!

if anyone has thought on my other questions about sim related unlocking versus yellowsn0w i would love to hear them..

cheers

Basically, it's all about the baseband.

Firmware 2.2.0 from Apple = baseband 02.28.00
Firmware 2.2.1 from Apple = baseband 02.30.03

yellowsn0w will only (at time of writing) work with baseband 02.28.00

If you buy a stock iPhone that has firmware 2.2.0 and you want to update to 2.2.1, you use Pwnage Tool to build a custom 2.2.1 firmware. The point of building a custom firmware, is to avoid the baseband upgrade. Then you can use yellowsn0w to unlock.

If you buy a stock iPhone that comes with firmware 2.2.1, you're out of luck at this time as far as using yellowsn0w to unlock your phone. You can NOT downgrade the baseband.

I don't know much about turbo sim cards and such, but a quick search of the forum will get you some answers.

should have the read the blog like you said!!!
:p

nice one dZp, my brain is getting it now..

any ideas of how i can tell by lookng at an iphone box what firmware would be on it?

bit of a long shot i know!!

how long has the baseband change been around for? do you think the dev team will crack this part?

cheers

Luck of the draw really!
Check the serial number on the box and work out what week it was manufactured. The 3rd digit is the year. The 4th and 5th digits are the week number. Find one with the year/week being prior to the release of the 2.2.1 update, and you should be OK.

Firmware 2.2.1 came out January 27, 2009.

great..

just found this..

Digits 1 to 3 (7T7) = Year / Batch code
Digits 4 to 5 (27) = Week of manufacture
Digits 6 to 8 (XZY) = Unique identifier part of the S/N
Digits 9 to 11 (WH8) = 8Gb model

will investigate..

thanks for your help... :)

cheers
