I know the answer is on this site somewhere ... but I'm not sure what my question is to find the answer.

I have a 1st generation iphone, unlocked and jailbroken about a year ago. Since then, I've become an ATT customer with data plan and unlimited texting, but no iphone plan.

I'd like to use the new app store/itunes/etc and keep my non-iphone plan.

Where do I start??

Thanks :)

Well...yes.
You need to update the firmware, which will erase your jailbreak. Then after updating, you will need to unlock and jailbreak again.

update the firmware through itunes? then unlock and jailbreak? I need to jailbreak and unlock, even though I have ATT?

this was much easier for me when there was only one iphone. LOL.

Make sure that you do not update to 2.2.1, as you will not be able to unlock the phone.
Wait a minute... 2G or 3G?

2G
version 1.1.4 (per the settings on the phone)

Go to this site, scroll down until you see this "iPhone (2G) firmware software 2.2: iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw". Download the firmware and place it on your desktop.
Once it is downloaded, open iTunes and under the summary tab for your iPhone, hold shift (Windows) or option (Mac) while clicking restore. Select the firmware via the window that pops up. iTunes will update the phone to 2.2

Then, download QuickPWN here.

Follow the guide here if you use Windows.

I was really hesitant to try anything without asking for help first .. I really appreciate the help!! thanks SO much!!

one last newbie question -- I take out the SIM card, right?

you do know that at&t offers cheaper iPHone plans for 2G users.

Anyway, my suggestion, just jailbreak it, and yes, you can just add the iPhone plan to your existing contract.

one last question -- I need to upgrade my itunes to the new version before doing all this?

alchemistmuffin -- if I change to an iPhone plan, I'll be paying more than I am now .. and I'd rather not do that. LOL.

You gave him the link to 2.2. He's using the first Gen iPhone, so he could have just updated straight to 2.2.1 through iTunes, Jailbroken, and then Unlocked with QuickPwn/PwnageTool

So yeah, you might as well update to 2.2.1 through iTunes normally, then Jailbreak and Unlock with whatever method you prefer.
