Hey Everyone,

I've done a bunch of searching but can't seem to come up with any definitive answers. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've got a Telus iPhone 4, untethered jailbreak iOs 5.1, baseband 04.12.01.

I'm traveling out of the country in a couple of days and want to unlock it. I've looked at the carrier option through Telus, but it's $35 and I'm nervous about how the factory unlock works with a Jailbroken phone. The steps online say it has to be plugged in to iTunes. Can I use this unlock method if it's jailbroken? And if I unlock it and want to upgrade to iOS 6 jailbreak, will I lose the factory unlock?

I've also looked at the SAM procedures, and that seems like it would be easiest, but I won't have my computer with me to plug my phone into iTunes. I don't have the other SIM card (I'll purchase it on arrival), so I can't do it before I leave. Is there a foolproof way to do a SAM unlock without iTunes?

Any help would be much obliged.

You should pay the small fee and get if factory unlocked.
Even though they tell you to restore it you dont really have to.
Once the unlock is processed as soon as you put in another carriers sim it will bring you back to the activation screen and then you can connect to wifi and activate it with any gsm sim.
And the factory unlock is forever. You dont lose it no matter how many times you restore, update, jailbreak doesnt matter at all.
The SAM unlock trick doesnt work any more. It has been patched a long time ago.

Thanks.

Just for clarification though, when you say once it's unlocked, I have to connect to wifi with the iPhone, and then activate the Phone? or activate the SIM card? Just curious because I'll be unlocking it a couple of days before I get the new SIM card, and might not have wifi right away when I arrive.

Thanks.

When the phone first recognizes a new sim it will take you to the activation screen again and in order to communicate with Apples servers and work with the new sim it will need an internet connection.

Thanks again. I just called the carrier and they apparently cannot unlock it because I'm on my new phone and they no longer have the ability to connect to it to unlock it from their end. Ughh...

You can try ebay, or some other 3rd party unlockers, you might have to end up paying more as I think Telus Canada grey market unlocks are upwards of $100.

If you do get it unlocked, and you won't have your new sim and cannot activate sim once you get it (no internet/computer/wifi), then I recommend a restore immediately after you get your unlock, your phone should connect to servers and tell you it is unlocked, at which point you can stick any sim in there and it will be fine.

That doesnt make any sense.
All they would need to unlock it is its IMEI number.
Try calling again and hopefully you get someone that knows what they're doing.
