I have killed my old unlocked 2g iPhone (fell in the toilet!).

Can I go now and buy a pay-as-u-go 3g iPhone from CPW\O2 and unlock it to use on tmobile uk... or will it have the new firmware on already making it impossible.

Help! Thanks in advance.

Dunno. It really depends on the speed with which your local Carphone Warehouse clears their stock. If they don't move the phones very fast, I'd imagine they'll still be on 2.2 or even 2.1. If, on the other hand, they sell the phones quickly then they'll get the newest models, which may be loaded with 2.2.1

It's not really a big deal though, as you can just use a SIM proxy until a software unlock is released.

I don't think they're sold on 2.2.1, I don't even think they sell them on 2.2

So yes, it will be possible as long as you do not upgrade through iTunes. You'll have to use PwnageTool.

Thanks for all the help. It worked.

It was 2.2 out of the box. I activated with the pay as you go sim to o2, then jailbroke (took hours as kept getting error 21 - but then on attempt number 50 odd it just worked for some reason) and then unlocked.

Thanks again.:)
