Okay there seems to be some confusion here and I'd like to sort it out

This is a quote from the iPad manual on Apple.com

iPad is unlocked, so you can choose your preferred carrier. Cellular data settings vary depending on the carrier. If you choose a carrier other than AT&T (U.S. only), contact them to set up an account and to obtain a compatible micro-SIM card.

The iPad IS unlocked but you can only use it on AT&T in the US, which lead people (and apparently apple employees) to believe it was locked to AT&T.

You can take your USA iPad up to Canada (for example) when it is released along side of microsims and use your iPad there, it is NOT locked to any certain company, the only reason you can only use it in the states on AT&T is because of the deal they have with AT&T and the availability of microsims

Thanks

In fact, just to add, MicroSIM is only available from around 10 carriers worldwide... So technically, at the moment you can only use those 10 carriers worldwide.

If T-Mobile released a microSIM tomorrow for their data plan, you will be able to use it... But of course only EDGE and no 3G as T-Mobile is using 1700 and iPad only supports 850/1900/2100 UMTS frequency.

Ah damn... I'm in Canada trying to give myself an excuse not to drive over the border to pick up the 3G version and use it only on wifi until microsims are released here in Canada. This doesn't help.

Actually, you could cut down a T-Mob mini SIM and use it w/ that carrier, however, you would only get EDGE since T-Mob's 3G service isn't compatible w/ the iPad.

A mini SIM vs a micro SIM are the same guts, just more/less plastic around the guts. Check google and there are people who have cut a mini SIM to micro SIM sizes and it works fine.

This is also correct... If you can get another SIM and use it as the cutting specimen that'll work :D But then again you won't be able to put it in every other devices except iPad and the next gen iPhone v4

Yes I am in Canada as well but Rogers will announce their plans on May 10.

I meant to say AT&T is only company with iPad specific plans, if [insert company here] came out with microsims and iPad plans you could use them as well. I meant that they had a deal to offer specific plans, not tied to that specific carrier per say
