unlocked iPhone with At&t service

I tried searching the forums, but I haven't found anything close...

Has anyone unlocked their iPhone but still used a different SIM card than what the iPhone comes with?

a friend of mine wants to unlock an iPhone - he's on at&t already but doesn't want to give up all the minutes he has.

Yes you can use any other att sim. I use my old Cingular sim with my media max plan.

Do you get all the features like visual voicemail, etc.? I already have a plan w/ AT&T with Mediamax unlimited data and was thinking of doing the same thing as you.
