My unlocked iPhone originally working well since January has now malfunctioned, allowing incoming calls and texting both directions but no longer able to call out. I cross between the US and Mexico every month and have been successfully switching SIM cards until today.

The only thing that I did different this time was while in the US, I switched off Yellowsn0w in Boss Pref and then switched it on again when back in Mexico. I tried reloading yellowsn0w but no luck. Using version 0.9.8

One more thing of interest, 3G data service suddenly appeared, something that you must normally sign up separately for in Mexico. I don't have a plan, just the prepaid card. Any ideas?

Make sure 3G is switched off when you are using yellowsnow.

Thanks I just tried that but with no luck. Anyways, it always worked before with 3G here in Mexico. The only thing that I did different when returning to the US last time was to switch yellowsn0w off. Once back in Mexico, I switched it back on again and now it won't dial out. I just get a sign that says call failed. Any more ideas?
Thanks

Try doing a DFU restore with a custom 2.2.1 firmware from pwnage tool. And redownload yellowsn0w.

Thanks again. Your solution makes the most sense but I am a novice with computers. Can you please explain how to do a custom restore with pwnage tool? Is this something that I need to download or does it exist in Cyndia?

Just run pwnagetool with 2.2.1 firmware to get a custom version. Then use that file, and go into itunes and push cmd and press restore, and pick that file. Make sure to put the iPhone into DFU mode first.

How do I get 2.2.1 firmware? I have found a few sites that have it but it won't download into my older and newer Mac. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

Just did a restore using a custom Pwnage as directed and the phone still won't dial out. It does receive and text though. Now what?

Maybe it is the sim card?

Thanks. That was the first thing I tried but the SIM worked fine in another phone. I guess there is a chance my SIM is corrupted just enough not to be read by my iPhone so I'll try a fresh card next.
Thanks again

Just tried a friends SIM card and it did not work in my phone either. Any more ideas? Is there a setting somewhere in the phone that blocks the ability to dial out?

Staff should take note of the solution that we just discovered after a week of tinkering. Turn on the Show Caller ID function because in Mexico and maybe other countries, that is required to dial out. I believe the instability of Boss Pref to be the culprit because I never turned it off.
