I unlocked my phone after I upgraded to 1.1.2. A friend wanted me to upgrade hers. She bought a refurb which came with 1.1.1. Her phone is activated and has been working fine for months. I have been reading tutorials and it seems easier since it came with 1.1.1, but I am not sure if the tutorials are talking about unlocking it before it was activated or after. Any suggestions or comments would be great. Thanks in advance.

I had mine "re-locked" (was unlocked before in 1.0.2) and did the whole process for 1.1.1, seeing hers is activated and "locked" I just would follow the instructions of hacktheiphone.com ignoring the activation steps and just getting the ones that will unlock the phone (TIFF exploit, installer). Let me tell you that unlocking 1.1.1 is pretty much the easiest "hack" in the world, seriously, you don't even need a computer, just an active wi-fi network and your fingers ejeje. Hope this helped.

Go to-->

www.jailbreakme.com

(in your iPhone of coarse)
and install AppTapp

After that Installer will be installed etc. Then you can use the Free version of the unlock (anySIM) or the paid version (iPhone SimFree) to unlock. Cheers

can i just go to jailbreakme.com and install the apptapp?

Yup, that should take advantage of the TIFF exploit, install "Installer", crash the iPhone thus activating it; once there follow te instruction of hacktheiphone.com regarding the source in "Installer" for anySIM (its pretty easy). Hope this helped.

I truly recommend you to use anySIM (worked for me and 3 of my friends) and according to the dev team, something in IPSF (iPhone SIM FREE) makes a "damage" in the base-band that cannot be corrected (by them and they're good) whilst in anySIM it can be repaired; besides I really doubt you want to pay a ridiculous amount of money to unlock your phone when free versions are available.

Since it's already activated, there's no reason to use AnySIM or anything like that. Just go to jailbreakme.com as suggested before and get Installer, it's all up to you after that as far as what to install.

Thanks for all the replies. I am not worried about the ANYsim program, because she is not changing service. she just wants to add programs and themes and whatnot. I unlocked mine but mine is 1.1.2. hers is 1.1.1 so i figured it would be easy. The problem I was having, was just going to jailbreakme.com seemed to easy, like there had to be more steps involved.

yes it is

Yeah, that's the amazing thing for 1.1.1 IT REALLY IS THAT EASY! enjoy!

If you want to unlock the phone I suggest using IPSF as although apparently it damages the baseband that is ONLY IF apple change the way that they lock the phone - and seeing as the current bootloader is so far unlockable I cannot see any reason for them to do that - which means IPSF remains in my opinion the best way to unlock the phone as it STAYS unlocked through all the upgrades.

I had an anysim unlocked 1.0.2 phone which I could not upgrade as it would have been "bricked" and I didn't want to wait for the dev team to create the revirginize tool so I bought IPSF which fixed the problem and unlocked it and it stayed unlocked through the 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 updates.

So far for ease of use IPSF wins for me, but it does cost $60 and if Apple ever did change the upgrade process it may mean you can never upgrade the phone again (although as I said who knows if they ever will and if it does happen then maybe there will be a fix for it - we can't be sure as Apple have not done it yet!).

Although as far as jailbreaking goes then unfortunately you have to downgrade to 1.1.1 first then use the jailbreakme.com dev team jailbreak and go back to 1.1.2 or Independence (On Mac) there is currently no other way to jailbreak although it sounds worse than it actually is to do!

Jailbreakme.com is really easy and it looks so polished - you would think Apple created the application to jailbreak the phone!
