Unlocking a used iPhone

I'm thinking of buying a used iPhone from someone who is has activated it and using it on att.

I need to unlock it for tmobile.

Can you unlock it if its been activated on att? I doubt I'd get the att sim card with it. Does that matter?

It was a 1.1.2, but he updated it to 1.1.3 already. Will that cause a problem?

What else to look out for buying used?

Currently it's not possible to unlock the 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 because of the bootloader version they use.

I think you should aim for a 1.1.1 or lower firmware version until there is a good software only workaround.

Other alternative is to go with a SIM card that will allow you to unlock it (around $100 more).

unlocking a used iphone

I got a 8 gig iphone on ebay. It has been previously activated and it does not come with the origional sim card. The iphone version is 1.1.2 and was interested if there can be a way to unlock it. I have att service and have a sim card from a blackjack phone.

Also will a stealth sim card work to unlock a previously activated iphone without the origional sim card. THANKS. ;-)

I'm curious to know this as well, as I'm planning on putting my iPhone up on eBay this week. I've been using it since last October. I activated it with its original SIM card through my AT&T family plan. I just jailbroke my phone in 1.1.2. I want the buyer to be able to unlock it in case they don't want to use AT&T.
